Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

About once a week the top part of the freezer is defrosting for about a day and the bottom is still cold and the water dispenser freezes up. The ice cubes melt drip down and refreeze on the bottom ledge of the freezer. Meat in the meat keeper freezes and vegetables freeze as well. The upper part of the fridge appears to maintain an acceptable temperature. After about one day all goes back to normal.

The problem is not with the dispenser but is the result of what is happening in the freezer. I need to know why the freezer is behaving the way it is and how to correct it. There must be something that relates to the weekly cycle of the problem that lasts 12 to 24 hours.
    Thanks
    Dave

There is air getting into the freezer from where the ice and water come out. The problem is probably the solenoid that controls the flapper for your ice. Open your freezer and try and look through the flapper and see if its open. If it is check and see what the problem is. If the solenoid is corroded and looks bad replace it. If the mount where the flapper goes is broken replace that.

Contact a professional. Sounds like either your damper door is not operating correctly and not letting enough cool air from the freezer enter, or there is an air leak that is making ice form .

your evaporator coil in the rear area behind the freezer back panel is frozen over with ice and the coil can no longer deliver cold air due to ice blocking the air flow from the evaporator fan, remove this rear panel, defrost it with a hair dryer, check the defrost heating coil for continuity, they go bad regularly,if not the heater coil under the evaporator coil,it may be the defrost timer in the refrigerator section of the unit that powers the defrost coil that needs replacement

You have a defrost issue.Occurs when door is accidentally left open.(even slightly for a period of time). You need to do a proper 12 hour defrost to resolve this problem.(Fan is jammed due to ice build up)

Freezer has stopped freezing

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A DEFROST ISSUE. THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS YOU WILL NEED TO TEST TO CONFIRM WHICH PARTS ARE BAD, BUT YOU CAN GET YOURSELF GOING AGAIN TEMPORARILY BY REMOVING THE BACK PANEL FROM THE FREEZER, THERE YOU WILL FIND THE EVAPORATOR AND IF IT IS ICED UP YOU CAN THAW IT OUT BY USING HOT WATER OR LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN UNTIL THE ICE MELTS. MAKE SURE TO UNPLUG UNIT BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. AFTER ALL ICE IS MELTED COVER BACK UP AND THAT WILL GET YOU COLD AGAIN FOR A FEW DAYS MAYBE WEEKS. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED HELP WITH THE COMPONENT TESTING.

Kennmore model 253

Unplug the unit, open the freezer door and look through the vents at the bottom of the back wall. With enough light you should see the alluminum coil through the vents. If there is ice/frost in the vents your coils are frozen up. Remove the cover on the inside back wall of the freezer you may need to remove the ice maker as well if you have one it just plugs into the back wall there is also a plug behind the cover to the back upper left corner. Once the cove is out of the way use a hair dryer to defrost the coils or leave the unit unpluged for a while. After all the ice is gone reinstall the cover and turn the unit on it will probably work for 3-10 days and then the process must be repaeted again. I replaced the defrost thermostat on mine 2 weeks ago and all is good so far. The defrost thermostat is a little round device that snaps onto the small copper line in the upper right corner behind back cover it has 2 blue wires and cost's about $20.

Hope this helps
