Question about Apple iMac G4 Desktop

1 Answer

G4 problem My G4 is acting weird.  None of my icons are popping visual on the desktop, not even the hard drive.  The top strip that show the apple icon, file, edit, bookmark, etc... keeps disappearing and reappearing. Even as I type it goes in and out like I clicked on the desktop and then clicked back on to the safari window.

Hi, Try shutting the G4 completely down, waiting about 15 seconds, and then booting the Mac with the shift key down. That should clean up a lot, as it gives a safe boot. Then go to disc utilities and repair permissions. That might clean the whole thing up for you. If sounds like it's a Finder problem. If that doesn't work, boot from Disc Warrior or Tech Tools and run a few tests. Good luck!

How do i shut mac off then put start up disk in ?

Simple. Load the Apple System start-up disc first while the computer is running. You should see its icon on on the screen. Then select restart from the Apple Menu on the top left of the screen. Hold down the C key as it reboots. You will now boot into the start-up disc. This method also applies to Disc Warrior and other tools. Alternately, with the computer already running, insert the Apple System start-up disc then go to System Preferences also under the Apple menu, Under the start-up disc icon, select your apple system icon and restart.
Third alternative. With the computer running insert Apple System start-up disc. Restart the computer. Before the chime, press and hold the option key, left-hand bottom side of the keyboard to the left of the Apple (Command) key. You will see your system HD icon and the screen as well as your Apple System disc. Click on the System Disc and that will boot the machine.

When trying to start, I get a "honk" instead of normal chime and then the light flashes occasionally from dim to bright but computer does not turn on

Here is an old Mac trick that sometimes works. Turn computer on. Hold down (at the same time) Control (Apple key) Option P and R keys. Yes, you may need more than two hands. Hold those keys until you here three or four chimes. Release and wait for the computer to start.
Another trick: Hold down the Option key when starting. You should see your hard drive logo on the screen. Select it, then the arrow on the right and see if it starts.
If you have a backup firewire drive (and you should) plug in that drive, start with the Option key pressed, and see if both drives show up as icons. Select the backup drive, Not plug and play, more like plug and pray,
If none of these tricks work, you could have a memory issue, a power supply issue or a motherboard issue. G4s are real cheap now. $40-$60 You can always pull the hard drive and mount it in another computer. And for your own protection, back up that hard drive to a bootable external firewire drive.

How fix Loud g4 Hard Drives

Not sure what you mean by loud Hard Drives. Hard drives are so quiet you can barely hear them. If they are loud the only cure is replacement. However, I have never heard a hard drive that I would consider 'loud' in all my years in computing./ As you show a mirror fronted mac in your question - I think you may mean loud 'Fans'. This mac was notorious for its loud fans. They can be replaced, but I seem to remember a firmware fix from Apple to slow them down - or it may have been a 3rd party utility.

The dvd icon does not show up on my emac. it plays music but not dvds. The emac is hardly used since I bought it in 2004. Can you help?

It is possible that you only have a CD drive in the emac, particularly with it being an old model. You can check it out by going to the apple menu and down to about this mac and then click on the more info button and when the system profiler comes up click on disc burning and you will see what type of discs the disc drive plays. Hope this helps.

It can not find the hard drive or the startup folder on the hard drive. Try and fix that by putting in the original boot cd/dvd and repair and choose your hard drive start up folde as boot device. If you can not your hard drive may have died.

When my imac g4 tries to bootup it shows a folder icon

It sounds like the system is corrupted. What I would do is to get your instal disk and boot up holding down the c key on your keyboard. Once you have booted up go to the file menu and run disk utility to verify and repair the hard drive. Then go to the instal menu and instal a fresh system remembering to preserve the users data so you do not wipe anything. Hopefully this will work.

Start up disk is almost full

Computer technology moves swiftly and your aging G4 is a casualty in that movement. I suggest purchasing an external hard drive and move your audio files and your video fines to the new drive. Another option is to purchase a larger internal drive for your G4 but the disadvantage it going this route will not be easily transfered to a new computer in the future. The external will give you the freedom to move it from machine to machine.
