Definitely sounds like you have a bad CCD. The good news is, this camera is under recall for that exact issue. Canon will repair your camera OR possibly replace it with an S5IS even! Free of charge of course.
From Canon website: "U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040".
Explain to them that you have an S1/IS with a bad CCD and are interested in getting it serviced by them.
