Question about Digital Cameras

1 Answer

My Canon SI/IS Power Shot digital camera is not able to bring up image on normal operating picture modes. It does however still show stored pictures when I change back to images already stored in camera. In picture mode all I get is a dark screen and lines. What's up?

When I turn on my PowerShot SD400 camera, the screen displays a nonsensical image and I can't view any menu or functions.

I am able to shoot photos (blindly, so to speak) as when I put my SD card on my computer, the photos come up. But I cannot see what I am shooting or control any menus.

Definitely sounds like you have a bad CCD. The good news is, this camera is under recall for that exact issue. Canon will repair your camera OR possibly replace it with an S5IS even! Free of charge of course.

From Canon website: "U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040".

Explain to them that you have an S1/IS with a bad CCD and are interested in getting it serviced by them.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

I have a Canon Power Shot A580 i just want to erase some photos from the camera thats it

Put the camera in picture review mode. Then use the zoom to bring up thumbnail diplays. Use the up/down, right/left buttons to navigate to the individual picture that you want to erase. Then press the "trashcan" button on the back of your camera. Select yes when it asks if you want to delete this picture.

Alternately you can delete all the pictures by again selecting picture review mode, pressing "menu", then scrolling to "erase all" pictures.
