THANK YOU SO MUCH, I spoke with manufacture this morning and they basicly said the same with the following directions.

    Partitioning Instructions

This process will only work if you are using Win2000, WinXP, or Vista .

If you have put any data on the drive that you need, please copy it to a different data storage device and ensure the integrity of the data before proceeding with the following steps.

****ALL DATA WILL BE ERASED DURING THIS PROCESS****

RIGHT CLICK on MY COMPUTER and choose MANAGE

Then under STORAGE click on DISK MANAGEMENT

The drive may need to be initialized first. Right Click on Disk # to do this if the wizard doesn’t appear by itself.

On the bottom right you should find your drive listed

    It should show Healthy

RIGHT CLICK on the area that is listed as HEALTHY

Choose DELETE PARTITION and YES to continue

Then you should see the entire space of the drive as Unallocated

Now RIGHT CLICK in the UNALLOCATED area

Choose NEW PARTITION, this will open the NEW PARTITION WIZARD

Leave the selection on Primary Partition and click next.

The next screen will allow you to enter the size you want for the partition.

After selecting the size you can just click next accepting all defaults, no additional changes are needed.

The drive will be reformatted and repartitioned which will take a few minutes.

Now repeat the process, starting from the New Partition step, for any additional partitions you choose to make.

Hi,

The external hard drive can be fomatted by :

Open the my computer, in the my computer or explorer window you should see the drive letter for the external drive.

Right click on the drive you will get the popup menu.

In that select the format option.

But always use NTFS file formatting system.NTFS provides several advantages over FAT32, including support for larger ile sizes.

Use the full format option.

Wait for sometime, until the format is completed.

Then you are good to go.

Good Luck.

Live, Love, Laugh.

Check the usb port function in the computer bios settings and be sure that it is set to yes. Connect properly your external drive. If it has two wire usb connections, use both to obtain the maximum power that will be need by your drive.

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****

Simpletech hard drive

Your desktop usb compatibility is not supported your 160GB. The only way to attach you 160GB is to make it secondary partition to your primary drive by opening the CPU and attach it to your IDE cable.

Don't force yourself if you cannot do it by yourself just leave it to the expert. Probable cause to damage your hard drive if it is not installed properly.

Please rate me solved if you like my solution.
