Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Dear, is there a possibility to adapt my WD by software as a media player? So plug and play. Now he works very well as data storage, but I would like to put also films to the WD. Our TV is also connected to our network; with this opportunity we are able to select the WD. I hope that you can help me.

  • John van Driel Sep 01, 2010

Lee, herewith the information you ask.

The operation system is Windows 7

The type of the television is; Philips 42PFL96 03D/H/10/12.

  • John van Driel Sep 03, 2010

Lee, thanks for this info. Let me again explain for clarity.
I have a WD 2xTB. This is directly connected to the router and is accessible to everyone and so runs on the network. Now we have a TV Philips brand also through the router on the network. with the television we have the opportunity to select a computer and that computer music, pictures and galleries watch videos. What I want, I want to be able to use the television to the WD to go to take pictures or a movie selection so that we can also watch or play. This WD is equipped for data storage and there is no mutimedia available. Now this problem is known and it is also through the Internet indicated that this can be remedied by WD to other programming. Now I do not want their contained the risk that the Wd irreparably damaged. That is why I try this way through your expertice. I hope this information you now know better what is meant above all, that a solution can be offered. Otherwise we would have to buy a multimedia player.
Please let me know. Thank advance and will soon have a nice weekend.

I am not sure if I understand your problem completely. When you have the unit plugged in it should show up as a drive, if your tv is already connected to the network are you able to access any video's from your tv off of this drive? To assist you better i will need to know what operating system you have on the computer and what is the model of the television.
Thank you,
Lee

    Question
Can I connect an external Hard Disc Drive (HDD) to my TV?

    Answer

You can connect your TV to an external HDD in two ways.

Connecting an external HDD as a Mass Storage Class device:

With this connection, the HDD can be used only as a storage device.
The connection needs to comply with the following requirements:

    • The HDD must be formatted in FAT32 or NTFS.

    • The HDD needs to have its own power supply, because the TV does not offer any.

    • The HDD needs to be connected to a USB input.

Over this type of connection the TV will only be able to reproduce those
files that are stored in a format that is supported by the TV. (please
refer to the user manual to see which file types your TV supports)

You can verify how the HDD is formatted as follows:

    • Connect the HDD to a USB connection of your computer.

    • Wait until your computer has finished detecting and installing
the external device (you will see a pop-up screen that indicates that
the ´new hardware is ready to be used´).

    • Double-click on the ´My Computer´ icon on your desktop (or select ´My Computer´ from the start menu).

    • In the ´My Computer´ screen you will see an icon that represents the external HDD.

    • Right click on this icon and select (click) Properties.

    • You will now see a screen that displays important data about your HDD, including the type of ´File system:´

If your HDD has multimedia capabilities, you can connect it as a standard peripheral device: In
this case you need to connect the device to one of the TV´s audio or
video inputs (for video files, we recommend an HDMI-to-HDMI connection)

The internal multimedia player of the HDD will reproduce the files.
Therefore you will be able to playback any file that is supported by the
Codecs that are installed on the HDD.

Most external hard disc drives allow you to install additional Codecs by connecting them to a computer.

(please refer to the documentation of your HDD for instructions)
If you refer to p.253 of the manual here if gives you the list of supported formats as well:
    http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/4/...

    Thank you,
    Lee

Every time its gets to 62% is says an error with (8002F997) ive tired the method by swiching the media sever to disable but that didnt work. what eles do i do

Error code "8002F997" means your PS3 is having issues updating your system software directly via internet. As a workaround you'll use external storage media, such as a USB thumb drive, to transfer the software to your PS3

1. Requirements

- A USB cable (not necessary if using a USB thumb drive)
- A PC with Internet access
- Storage media or a USB Mass Storage device such as a USB flash drive

2. Downloading and saving the software

- Plug in your USB drive to your computer, and create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data. Create a folder named "PS3" on the storage media/USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named "UPDATE".

- Download the update data from

http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/us/2011_0310_91ee193a2fa921a6fce780fc40236e3b/PS3UPDAT.PUP

and save it in the "UPDATE" folder.

Note:

Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3 will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.

-> Location: Save in the "PS3" folder > "UPDATE" folder
-> File name: Save as file name "PS3UPDAT.PUP".

3. Updating the PS3 software

Note:

Do not turn off the PS3, or remove the USB drive, during the software update!

- Insert the USB drive/storage media into the PS3
- On your PS3, from Home Menu (second icon from the left) -> System Update ->Select [Update via Storage Media].

The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.

How to watch commercial DVDs on your wide screen TV via WD TV Mini Media Player

WD TV Mini Media Player provides an easy and affordable way to play back your digital media on your wide screen TV.  It serves as a conduit between your TV set and USB drive storage, no matter it is a camcorder, a humble flash drive, or an external HDD. Simply connect WD TV Mini to your TV, plug a USB-connected storage into the player and you are ready to enjoy all your digital media in DVD quality playback.
WD TV Mini Media Player supported media formats:
Videos:
AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG4), MPG/MPEG, VOB/ISO, MP4/MOV (MPEG4), RM or RMVB 8/9/10
Audios:
MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AAC, FLAC, MKA, OGG, APE
From the above list we can see that VOB is a playable format for WD TV Mini Media Player, does it mean that WD TV Mini can play all kinds of DVDs – whether home made DVDs or commercial DVDs? The answer is WD TV can not decrypt copy protected commercial DVDs, so you have to rip them. This tutorial aims to show you how to make it possible for you to watch commercial DVDs on your wide screen TV via WD TV Mini Media Player. What you will need is Pavtube DVD Ripper, it not only rips, but it encodes too. Following is the detailed operating steps:

Step 1: Click "DVD Rom", "DVD Folder" or "IFO/ISO" to load DVD files into this program.

Step 2: Select subtitle and audio track
Click on the pull down menu of "Subtitle" and "Audio" respectively to select your needed subtitle and audio language.
Step 3: Select output format for WD TV Mini Media Player
Click on the drop-down list at the end of "Format" to choose an output format for WD TV Mini Media Player. Your selection should be in the range of AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG4), MPG/MPEG, VOB/ISO, MP4/MOV (MPEG4), RM or RMVB 8/9/10. Here I select "Xvid AVI" as an example:

Step 4: Click "Settings" button to adjust video and audio parameters
The user manual tells us that when playback .avi (Xvid) video files, WD TV Mini supports up to 720*576 30fps or 720*480 30fps, so we need to follow the manual while ripping a DVD.

Step 5: Click "Convert" button to start DVD ripping
Once finished, you can get the generated files for WD TV Mini via clicking on "Open" button with ease. Afterwards, just copy the output files to My Passport portable hard drive or other USB drive, and then connect WD TV Mini to your TV, plug your USB drive into the player and you are ready to enjoy the movies ripped from your commercial DVDs.

I keep putting music onto my mp3 player and when i go to play it, the mp3 player says no data. it is recognising it on the laptop and will play the music from the mp3 player on the laptop but keeps saying...

the problem with this is normally the format. Sony Don.t normally play .WMA files they have to be converted to .Mp3 files. if that doesn't work then some media players need set storage locations to work, look in the instruction Manuel or try sending the info to your device using windows media player

I have Olympus DSS 7.0.1 Player and I deleted mp3 files, a group of them together. Is there anyway of recovering them?

You can connect your digital recorder to PC. Then you can try to recover your deleted files with Easy Drive Data Recovery software:

http://www.munsoft.com/EasyDriveDataRecovery/

It uses unique modern algorithms to recover files that other software either recovers incorrectly or is unable to detect.

WD Elements DCM BCCBAAA not working how to fixes this? plug in and no light comes on cant fin d removeble disc either

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.
