How old is the unit? Have you tried unplugging it for a half hour and restarting the machine? This can be caused by many things this U81 error literally means 'Microprocessor Communication Error on the Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter'
I would make sure the unit is in a well ventilated area. I would also contact panasonic if the problem persists and see what they can do as far as repairing/replacing the unit at little or no cost to you. I can get you their contact info if you give me your general location.
Thank you,
Lee

and how long have you owned the unit? did you buy it new? if its under warranty have it repaired/replaced by panasonic. As this is definitely an internal defect and could have been caused by the power outage.
    Thanks,
    Lee

Then it is definitely out of warranty. No this isn't a problem that is or would be fuse related. I would consider replacing the unit. Most likely the power supply internally needs to be repaired the the software reflashed although this isn't something you the consumer can do, it would take a qualified panasonic repair technician.
    Thank you,

What does U81 Mean on my DMR-EX75

Just make it a factory reset. Refer its user manual for details. Unplug it from AC mains.

U81 is permanently on the screen, I cant get the TV listing menu, nor can I get it to record, can you help?

U81 error literally means 'Microprocessor Communication Error on the Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter'.

This error can be caused by a number of different reasons but one of the most common is a software / firmware problem relating to the Freeview part of the unit.

If you turn the unit off for 30 minutes it should reset the fault.

At this point to need to check what version of firmware you have installed and then check the Panasonic website for your country for the latest version.

The DVD player on my Panasonic DVD DMR-EX75 is not working. It no longer is able to read the DVD disk. Is it worth repairing or replacing the DVD drive? The system also has a large Hard Drive which still...

It is up to you, if you are able to obtain a replacement DVD drive for this model series, and it isn't too expensive, go ahead. There may be tips on installing the DVD deck on other forums - or it might be really simple (a DIY job) - or for extra labour costs, a qualified technician can fit it for you in a service centre.

So the short answer is YES it is worth repairing since the HDD is still functioning - if you are concerned about that as well as the DVD drive, get the whole unit assessed by a workshop; they can advise you further.

A second opinion always helps in a case like this, but I would recommend trying to obtain a replacement DVD drive for this model, either locally or by ordering online. This one IS fixable.

U81 error up Do I have to take it to a electrical repairer or is there anything i can do ?

I posted a suggestion a couple of months ago about a similar Panasonic DVD recorder (model DMR-EX78EB) with this exact problem:

This is one of several error codes generated by the main microprocessor IC which are tripped by corruption, preventing proper operation and which may require the processor to be reset (where practical) or replaced.

The U81 and U80 codes don't mean anything in particular because the corruption error(s) could be caused by a number of different reasons. It does not point to any specific one fault. This is where the confusion sets in as to the origin of the 'error codes' in any device.

U81 means (in technical terms) 'microprocessor communication malfunction' on the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter' or 'microprocessor feedback information error'.

This is not something the user should undertake to repair themselves; it should really go to an authorised Panasonic repair centre. The cost depends on the parts used and the labour, however, it is not unfixable. You can always get a quote on this and a second opinion, then decide for yourself if it is economical or not.

The DMR-EX series of models are prone to U81 - which is a common (and extremely irritating) error code. As I said, it is not unfixable, if you are prepared to spend a fair amount of money on the repairs by a qualified service technician in a fully equipped workshop with access to all the required components and service manuals.

Certainly worth investigating at least; and you should not need to purchase a new unit. Go with the quote first - then decide on a further course of action.

My DVD RECORDER MODEL NO DMR-EX75EB, THE CODE U81 KEEPS COMING UP WHEN I SWITCH ON MY RECORDER, ALSO I CANNOT GET INTO MY SETTINGS TO SEE IF I CAN FIX IT. THANK YOU

This seems to be a common fault with many Panasonic DVD recorders of the DMR-EX series.

This is one of several error codes generated by the main microprocessor IC in the unit which are tripped by corruption, preventing proper operation and which may require the processor to be reset (where practical) or replaced.

U81 means (in technical terms) 'microprocessor communication malfunction' on the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter' or 'microprocessor feedback information error'.

This is not something the user should undertake to repair themselves; it should really go to an authorised Panasonic repair centre. The cost depends on the parts used (if available) and the labour, however, it is not unfixable. You can always get a quote on this and a second opinion, then decide for yourself if it is economical or not.

I posted this 'advice' for this (and a couple of similar models) previously. The DMR-EX series of models are prone to U81 - which is a common (and extremely irritating) error code. As I said, it is not unfixable, if you are prepared to spend a fair amount of money on the repairs by a qualified service technician in a fully equipped workshop with access to all the required components and service manuals.

Because of the malfunction, the user settings and options are inaccessible, and there is no official user-reset option on this or any model of the series to clear this particular error.

Certainly worth investigating at least, as Panasonic usually make great products.
It's up to you as to what you decide to do from here.
