Question about Home

Hi, I need to know how to change a washer for a modern shower tap. I normally know and can do this easily but i have come across a new style of tap, one without a cap in the middle of the tap handle, and without removing this cap to reveal the part to be able to use the spanner on the spindle, i do not know how to take off the handle to reveal the washer. Could you please shed some light on how to dismantle the tap to get to the washer? I would greatly appreciate it. Cheers!

What brand valve, and model number?

without that...
some handles are screwed on, some are held on with allen set screws.
it all depends on the valve, and the model number.

Bradford White 40 gal water heater, works fine, but has started whining when not in "low" setting. Seems to only do it during showers, or when temps drop outside etc. Only lasts a few minutes

it is possibly a high frequence '"water hammer" from a failing tap washer
call a plumber to replace all the tap washers especially the shower hot water tap washer
water hammer is when the water flow is intermittently interrupted ( (normally as banging pipes) but when it is fast it appears as a whistle or squeal

Don't try to repair it. Replace it. All hand held showers use 1/2" hose fittings so any brand divertor should fit. Bring the part with you as there are different styles.

We have two 16 year old shower faucets (house was built in 1993 by Del Webb). Can't tell what model they are. We are guessing they are Moen Legend 3175 (one handle). Problem seems to be pressure balancing...

This is a common problem with this type of shower mixer valve. They are not very good at regulating with pressure change. Your options are somewhat limited to not flushing the toilet or using any other taps when in use, repalce the mixer valve for a modern ceramic unit or installing a 2 vane hot & cold shower pump.

Hi there i seem to have a problem with my shower it was working fine but now its running like a driping tap ther is to presher and its not the head because its the same with the head off

If it has a single valve in the center you have gotton dirt in the valve and this is stopping the water from flowing, it is notto diffiuclt to fix if you know how to turn the water off let me know and I will tell you how to take it apart and clean it.

I have hot water coming out of house taps but not from out of the shower, we do not have a bath tub. there seems to be no obvious leaks. HELP! what can i do i have 4 stinky kids that badly need a shower

The tap fitting on the shower may have failed. Some of the modern fittings have a more complicated internal mechanism than the traditional taps and can fail rendering the tap inoperable. Turn off the water at the mains. First take off the tap handle and then with a spanner carefully unwind the tap spindle. Be very carefull not to use excessive force in case you damage the pipework behind. If it does not come ralatively easily leave it for someone else. When you have this out have someone crack the main valve and you should have hot water coming out. If the fitting itself is the problem you may be able to take the spindle and washer out of a standard brass garden tap and use it as a temporary fix untill you get a propper replacement. Just another thought, you may have an isolation valve on the hot water line to the bathroom. Could a kid have turned it off?

My triton martinique electric shower low pressure light comes on and the water goes cold but there is nothing wrong with the pressure

Hi,

I had a brand new Triton Rapide 3 with this issue, we had good water pressure but the light on the front would keep coming on.

I found there was a micro switch located at the front almost dead center of the shower, couldn't miss it when you removed the cover. A plastic arm below this switch is raised when the water pressure increases tripping this switch and allowing the heater to come on.

I found two things wrong with this, one this plastic leaver was thin and bent easily and secondly the switch did no line up overly well with the lever. Easily fixed, I cut an inch off the end of a zip tie or panduit strap, and super-glued it to the top of the lever (not the switch as the glue will probably ruin the micro switch.) 5 minute job later and with the shower back together it works beautifully. My wife will be happy, you wouldn't believe the torrid of curses I got this morning having only replaced the old unit last night.

Probably don't need to say this but, make sure you isolate the power before removing the cover.
