I had this problem too with the one I got from my sister. If you tap your finger in the lower right of the touch screen mine came back on. I think it resets the screen with commands that come back into the screen area. Try that and let me know. Dale.
Ditch it and buy another brand. These guys have very poor support. they promised new maps. nothing. they promised a fix for the Q: My MN2707 gets stuck on a screen that says "It is important that digital maps and PO", but the rest is cut off. NOTHING. you call them and they say the fix is coming. They have abandoned us so I say don't give them another nickle.

I had a problem when I went to the Garmin site to update my 2820. After the update, the touch screen function didn't work--it would freeze and I'd have to reboot it. In contacting Garmin, even though this was a high-end GPS and was not inexpensive when it came out, they said they would no longer support it and they wouldn't offer any suggestions as to how or who to go to in order to return its functionality. It looks like what happened when they stopped their customer support that they combined the software from the 2820 with their Nuvi software and while that might work for the map, it deactivated the touch-screen and bluetooth function. My unit still does not work.
Have you tried the screen recalibration; by touching
the upper right of the screen for 30 seconds or so while turning on the
unit. This usually cures the problem. Next try; sliding the "Power" key to the left position and hold it for eight to ten seconds to reset the Garmin. I have attached a link to the Garmin manuals for your 255W. Once you get it going you should update your unit also at the Garmin site. The updates will fix the software glitches. Thanks for using FixYa
There is a hard reset button under the sticker at the bottom of the
unit. It is located directly under the check mark on the sticker. Once you get it going fully charge the unit then go to the Garmin website and register and update your 255w. I will attach the link to the Garmin Site. Thanks for using FixYa
Sounds like your firmware needs updated. Just go to Garmin’s website then downloads and update your firmware. As long as there is no screen damage but just touch screen not working that will fix it. An easy test is to take out the battery and if the unit works for second then freezes you just need to update firmware. Turn off unit plug into computer via usb cable and do firmware update, that easy!!!! Hope that helps?
Worked for me but not sure why, I had the same problem of freezing when updating Bluetooth firmware on a Nuvi 770. I chose to reset all user data (press lower tight hand of touch screen while powering on) and next reboot it updated firmware sucesfully. No idea why this worked.
Can you enter the PIN number? Is the touch screen working? Many times a unit will appear to freeze when the problem is the touch scfreen. You need the PIN number and a working touch screen in order to get back into the Garmin and restore to default.
