Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

My microwave was working fine on Sunday 100% power, on Monday light & fan work, tray rotates but will NOT HEAT at all? The unit is exactly 4 years old this year, what could the issue be? The microwave we replaced was 16 years old & still worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Model is SMH7174WC

THere is no addition noise, it sounds like normal just NO heat. I called Samsung, & they cannot help without the serial #, which is located on the back of the unit, which is mounted on the wall, r u kidding me? The magnetron is warranteed for 10 yrs, but does that include labor? They will not even send someone out without the #. Any advise? Is it worth it? It's only 4 yrs. old.

My Samsung SMH7174WC failed with same symptoms after spouse boiled down an entire glass of water by mistake. Everything appears to be normal, but not heating.

Since the fan, light and try work, it's most likely a failed part or bad connection in the high voltage section, such as at the magnetron terminals.

Is the noise it makes when it's supposed either quieter or louder than when it was working?

To bqb17:

Samsung will only cover the cost of the magnetron (if that's the trouble) but they will require you to pay the service call labor (maybe $75) and on-site repair labor (maybe $50-90).

You can save a little by removing it from the wall yourself and taking it to the servicer. They would likely charge a bench fee of about $25 to check it out.

Are you sure the serial # is not located on a tag around the door frame or inside?

To guest:

Your oven's failure to start isn't the same problem bqb17 is having. His starts, it won't heat. So it would have been better to post a new thread.

But even so, I would suspect you have a bad door switch or door switch mount. Forget any talk about a "voltage stabilizer".

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Kitchenaid Superba KEMS307D Microwave buzzes, looks like it works, but doesn't heat. Full normal display, tray rotates, but fan doesn't sound normal.

Most likely causes - shorted high voltage rectifier, or failed high voltage transformer, or shorted high voltage capacitor, or shorted magnetron. If an odor accompanied the failure, high voltage rectifier or transformer most likely. All of these components operate on 4000 v, or more - with enough current to kill you. Make sure the unit is unplugged, and the high voltage capacitor is fully discharged before testing.

Water damage to microwave

There is a small sensor in the micro wave that controls the heat. You probably got water on the connections and shorted it out.

Do not heat any longer, lights, clock and fan work

In situtions such as these it can be considered that the Magnatron has passed on. Co0t of repair often exceeds the value of replacement.
No fuse controls the magnatron separately from the rest of the unit so deem it dead

With the availability of good second hand models on the market via pawn shops like Cash Converters etc one can find a very good unit with 30 day warranty for $50-100 and its already been checked over for defects

I have a GE Spacemaker II microwave: JEM25GY that died. It seems less expensive to replace rather than fix. Power works; it doesn't heat. New models all apparently have turntables; mine didn't and I...

YOU CAN TRY REMOVING THE GLASS TRAY AND TURNTABLE AND REPLACING IT WITH YOUR OLD GLASS TRAY (IF YOU HAD ONE) OR JUST ANY GLASS MICROWAVE TRAY. WITHOUT THE TURNTABLE, I CAN'T SEE HOW IT CAN ROTATE.

I have an overhead microwave oven/exhaust fan combo unit. Everything works but the microwave won't heat anything. It worked Sunday but not yesterday.

thats a tipical microwave problem they just pop off like a light bulb, it could be turminal or it could be a fuse, what ever it is dont try to fix it yourself there are over 1000 volts kicking about inside the thing and 1000 volts will kill you out right, call a guy in to fix it, look at it this way,, whats your life worth in £???
