No other way but to open to access the switch and first of all use a good switch cleaner to try if the contacts gets clean . check the continuity and repeat. Refitted it tight so that when you switch the lever moves to contact. If not there is no way but to replace the switch.

How to replace pre filter catch?

Unscrew this one screw to do it. wiggle the loose bit. until you can fit a flat head screwdriver into the gap the catch fits into . Dunt the bit out. Screw back into place. Push the catch in from the front until it clicks. 7ca98fa9-c03c-4ffb-ba67-ae98528a7147.jpg

Vacuum is turning on and off intermittently

Turn the vacuum ON.
Go to the plug while it is in the outlet, jiggle it and the wire going into it to see if there is a loose connection on that end.
Then go to where the wire enters the vacuum.
Jiggle that to see if that makes the vacuum stop.
If there are no problems found on either end of the wire, the next step it to open the machine and check the connections at the internal switch and the switch itself.
Let us know.

No power is coming in. plugged in, will not turn on. last time i used it, it would go on/off. if i bumped or hit it, it would turn back on. can this be fixed by a fair novice, or trash it?

Sounds like a loose wire or contact of some sort. Might be a bit too much for a novice to tackle.
I would start by UNPLUGGING the unit and try to get at the ON/OFF switch to see if there is a wire loose. If no loose wire is found I would trace the wire to the motor to see if there is a break in the cord, cut in the cord, etc.
Doing electrical work like this could be dangerous for the uninformed and may take some special equipment. Depending on what you paid for the unit, you may have to decide to pay or a repair or toss it.
WHATEVER YOU DO, MAKE SURE THE UNIT IS SAFE FROM ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT COULD HARM YOU!

Miele just stopped working?

Hello,

When a Miele canister just stops working all of a sudden, it's usually a pretty clear indication that either you have a bad cord reel, or a bad switch. I would say that in 60% of Miele repairs that I do with this problem, the cord reel has gone bad.

One easy thing that you can try to see if the cord is bad, is put one hand on the on/off switch, and the other hand grab the cord (making sure it's fully retracted inside the canister). Now pull the cord out slowly with your one hand, while continously turning the switch on / off, on / off. Keep pressing the switch on and off while pulling on the cord. Usually if the cord reel has gone bad, then you may hear the vacuum attempt to start, or even turn on while you're pulling on the cord. The cord reels in Miele use a metal spring inside that makes connection with the rest of the vacuum. Over time this spring will start to loose it's strength, and eventually will get so bad that it no longer makes contact with the rest of the vacuum. By pulling the cord out slowly and pressing the on / off switch, a lot of the times the spring will make connection somewhere, and the motor may turn on temporarily.

If this happens, this indicates your cord reel needs to be replaced. I have done a detailed repair here on Fixya on how to replace the cord on a Miele canister vacuum that you may read here;
http://www.fixya.com/support/t2281026-miele_s514_will_not_come

If you can't get the vacuum to turn on at all, this can only mean a few things. First the cord reels spring is gone completely, and wont make any connection with the rest of the vacuum, and you'll still need to replace it.

It also can mean that just the plug that plugs into the wall is bad, is your plug bent, or no longer straight on either prong?

It can also mean that your motor has gone bad. This however is usually the least likely of all the problems. The Miele motors are almost bullet proof, and typically last 20 years. I can count on one hand the number of Miele motor replacements I've ever done in 10 years of fixing vacuums.

I can try and help you diagnosis this further if my suggestions didn't help you. Please use the clarification request that you see here on this page to ask me a question. Please just let me know what happened when you tested the cord out as I suggested above. I really hope this was helpful to you. If you found this to be helpful, please be sure to rate the repair as helpful to you by clicking the thumbs up icon. I really appreciate that.

Replacing the power switch of the Eureka The Boss 4870 vacuum

its actually just held in place with two small plastic clips. so just gently start pulling the plastic housing up. it will pop off with some force. not so much that you break anything however. but there are no screws or anything. to get it back on you will need something to pry away the plastic section where the slots are for the clips. that way the clips can fit back in the slots instead of just dead ending into the handle. im sure there is a more proper way, but sometimes you have to get it done. my vacuum just stopped working one day. when I opened it up, I pushed the little connectors pretty hard back onto the switch. one of them clicked a bit. as it turns out it was just loose and therefore not making a proper electrical connection. so I pushed it snugly back together, jammed the housing back on, replaced the screws, and had it running again. just make sure to unplug it while you do this.

Kenmore vac won't shut off, blowing heavy air from vent

For the stack of problems you have, it sounds like it be best for you to ditch it and get a new vacuum. The heavy problem sounds like a motor issue. The burning smell is most likely from the belt being loose on the power head.

Economically, you should just get a new one instead of replacing the whole system guts

Henry's switch has come out.I found the red switch and 2 bent bits of metal. How do they fit together to make him work again?

Rather than coming out, it sounds more like the switch has come apart. It also sounds like you haven't got all the bits. Even if you'd got everything, and knew how to assemble it, there's a good chance it will come apart again anyway. The only safe thing to do is get a complete new switch.
I value your feedback, so please remember to rate this response. Good luck!

sounds like a loose wire, the wire is connected to the handle, you may be able to fix this yourself but be careful you can void the warranty by doing it your self. (most people make the problem worse) remember your kirby has a lifetime warranty (limited) the first 3 years anything and everything, after that for 175 dollars you can send it in and get it rebuilt to the newest model no matter how old it is as long as the person is still alive that signed the warranty card.

hope that helped.

Kirby vacuum problem

I suspect the safety/power switch. When nozzle is on the Kirby the protrusion on the nozzle casting must press the switch on the front of the unit (circled in red in the pictures below). See if that protrusion is not chipped off. It may be that a hook or even both are damaged (circled in blue) so nozzle is a bit loose and when you bump something it nozzle moves just releases the switch enough to shut the vacuum off. Hold the nozzle and try to move it. See if it is loose on the unit or not.
It could be the faulty switch too.
