Question about Belkin (F5D7231-4) Wireless Router

1 Answer

I forget how to go wireless. I have a belkin router, but when my old neighbors were still living near by they kept stealing my internet access. So I unhooked it and now I can't figure out how to get my computer to tell that I plugged it back in. It's like it won't see it.

Neighbor stealing from my Belkin internet connection.

Reinstall the software and set the router up again with yourself as the administrator and also set it up as a secured connection. It will walk you through the process screen to screen. You will then get him off of your network.

Where is the administration located?

You need to encrypt your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from Belkin to your laptop/computer's LAN port, open a browser on your laptop/computer and enter the Belkin's configuration URL. http://192.168.2.1
The default PW = blank (just press Enter) You can now change the default admin password.
You can now configure the wireless settings to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access. Now configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings. To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

How do I prevent my neighbor from using my wireless router?

If you do not have any wireless network security enabled on the router, your neighbor can see this SSID and connect to the network without authorization. While this is generally frowned upon as being unethical, it is technically not illegal as you have "made the network available" by failing to secure it. The easiest way to secure the network is through the use of a WEP key or a WPA pass-phrase. WEP keys are generally 5, 10, 13 or 26 randomly generated characters long. WPA pass-phrases are just that - a phrase such as "The sun is yellow". Either method will prevent unauthorized users from accessing your network. Only those individuals who possess the key or pass-phrase are granted access.

These options is located under the Wireless > Wireless Security tabs from within the router administration. After login you can change the password.

Just having the wireless router without connecting it to cable modem or DSL modem will not allow you to get onto the Internet. The wireless card in your computer/laptop will allow you to get onto the Internet at a free public WiFi hot spot location such as McDonalds, Star Bucks, at the airport.
Also the wireless card in your computer/laptop may allow you to connect into an unsecured wireless router from your neighbors, if their wireless router is within range of your computer/laptop but without their permission to use their Internet, it is considered stealing from your neighbor. They have a set download limit from their Internet Service Provider and by you connecting to their ISP you may cause them to exceed their download limit and they would be charged additional costs for every Mega byte over their limit.

How do i block someone from illegally stealing my wireless intern

Hello,

You have two options to stop someone from stealing your wireles connection.

The first is to use a more secure encryption.
Use WPA2 personnal with AES encryption.
You can set this security mode by logging on to your router and changinhg the wireless security.

The next solution is to turn on MAC filtering and make sure her computer is not listed as a safe MAC address.
This is also turned on from the router.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Pat

No connection on wireless adapter... do i need a router... i live in an area with wifi

Unless you live near a "free" wireless access point example a coffee shop that has such.
Then trying to use somebody else's wireless could be considered an offense

If you have internet and a wireless router you can use that so that you don't have to have your computer or laptop near the modem or run wires.

Neighbors stealing internet access

It's no problem all you need to do is access the administration page of the wireless router and setup security. Depending on what type of device you have there are several options. The most basic security is fine and you will need to create a passcode so that the PC's you want to access then internet will work. Then when security is setup you type the access codes in your PCs and you are good to go. I know this is very generic but I don't know which router you have. I can be more specific if you need, just let me know. Usually you access the admin page by the IP address of the router entered in Internet browser then it will ask for user and pass. ( if I know the model I might be able to tell you that as well)

Hope this starts the process for you, just send me comments if you need specifics

Netgear WPNT834 wireless not working

Hi Ashdan

channel 6 is very common with 2.4ghz wireless phones. Try changing the channel to a different one ie. 2 to -5 is rarely used so i suggest one of those. Also WEP is very insecure and easily hacked. If the only risk is people stealing your internet then i suggest you use MAC filter as the most secure way and turn off wep. This will make your router and internet surfing experience even faster.

good luck

smeags.
