You have some open resistors in the convergence circuits.

I have a Samsung model HLS5085WX/XAA. We have black specks all over screen and black horizontal lines approx 4 inches a part all the way across the screen

Hello,

All Plasma and LCD ts have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times resetting the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They an sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, but the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken if you decide to tinker with em, the usually have lift locks that release them. Good luck in rectifying the fault.

The picture in my Sony Wega is not nearly as clear as before.

Hi , it seems you are experimenting a light engine problem. Here's how your tv works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLLHnQ4y-wo Basically there's 3 LCD chips that create the colors and image by blending together. When these chips start to melt you will get those blue spots, pixilation even vertical lines. You will need to replace the light engine. Have a blessed one!

I have not fixed it yet. But I have identified the chip that is causing the problem. If you have a service manual scan it and post it please, so I can show you the chip.

If still under warranty or if you have no electronic repair experience you should take the set back to the shop or to a repair person. Some of the solutions described below can be dangerous, TV's are very hazardous to service. Even when plugged out, TV's can store very high voltages. This should not be an expensive job at most repair shops. Could be something as simple as cracked, cold, defective solder joints around and near the vertical output chip, could be a faulty chip and other components in and around the vertical deflection circuitry, or a faulty vertical drive signal from the jungle circuits, or worst case a faulty deflection yoke. Take your television to a shop right away for a proper and safe repair. Do not keep the television looking at the red horizontal line.... you can easily damage or burn the CRT phosphors. Good luck
