Question about Acomdata 250GB External Firewire HD 250 GB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive

1 Answer

Acomdata external hard drive

I bought a hi-speed USD 2.0 external hard drive over a year ago and want to learn how to use it. The accompanying CD is just a USB driver and my computer says it already has the software installed.

Anyway, the computer can not recognize the device when it is hooked-up and needless to say I cannot write any files to it. In the computer management pop-up box it says that a device with 204 MB is attached to it - this device is at least 250GB. Is it possible that I need to partition this device before I use it or is it already formatted? If so, how can I partition it.

The acomdata technical help site is very laborious to get through - can someone offer some practical help.

Thanks so much

THe book says to go to

My computer
select Manage in pop-up menu
select storage
select disk management
look for the drive that has capacity closest to acomdata device
right click on right hand box
in the pop-up menu select delete partition - once you do this, it will say "Online and Unallocated"
Right click on the box and select create new partition.
When the partition window appears, select primary partition and click on next.

No ned to check in that.

The external hard drive can be fomatted by :

Open the my computer, in the my computer or explorer window you should see the drive letter for the external drive.

Right click on the drive you will get the popup menu.

In that select the format option.

But always use NTFS file formatting system.NTFS provides several advantages over FAT32, including support for larger ile sizes.

Use the full format option.

Wait for sometime, until the format is completed.

Then you are good to go.

Good Luck.

Make sure all of your connections are secure.

If you have an add-on card, make sure it is working properly and/or update the driver.

Also, make sure you have all the latest updates for your Windows operating system.

Check in the device manager whether it is installed or not.

If it is found in the device manager follow these :

    Right Click on My Computer

    Go to Manage..

Go to storage – disk management

    · A wizard should appear if the drive has never been connected to your machine. Follow the direction, selecting the drive not checked.

If the wizard does not appear, Right click on Disk X (X being the drive that is unknown), select “Write Signature..” or “Initialize..”. Click OK.

Right click on the unallocated disk
    Select Create Partion

    A wizard will appear

    Click next

    Select Primary Partion

Select size of the partion (use the default value to use all of the drive)

Specify drive letter (it is recommended to use the default)

    To format use:

    · NTFS – if for use on Windows 2000 only. This is the only option if the drive is larger than 32 GB. Windows FAQ

    · FAT32 – if for use on both Windows 98/ME and Windows 2000/XP if the drive is less than 32 GB. Windows FAQ

    Click finish

When finished formatting (100%) exit the utility

Try connecting the drive to the other Firewire port.

    Check the cable.

    Restart the system.

    Everything should work fine now.

    Good Luck.

If the hub has an external power supply it migh do the trick. That way you can have a backup port if needed.

Make sure the hard drive isn't connected to the hub. Sometime windows doesn't see it when its connected to a hub.

External hard drive will not turn on

Try a new enclosure, the case is just that. A hard drive cannot actually repaired. You cant open it and fix it. It's either reliable and functioning or not. Purchase a new enclosure and test the old drive. Data recovery should be the last option..most places charge a down payment on a car, and most of the time ( in my 12 years ) its the cheap enclosure.

    Keep me posted.
