This could be for various reasons. Check the power cord and try a different outlet first. See if the power cord is loose or damaged. Next check the brushroll and belt that those are in working order. If you smelt burning or electrical fire or your vacuum made an odd noise before stopping it may be the motor going bad. If your power cord is good and the brushroll and belt good, it is probably your motor going bad.
I am having the same trouble. I bought the vacuum new in October 2007 when my wife and I purchased a newly constructed home. Since it is only two of us, she only has to vacuum once a month. I have taken it in three different times and get the same story. It needed a new belt. Mine has white smoke coming out of it and smells like burning rubber. I contacted Oreck and got no results. They refused to let me discuss this with Dave Oreck, stating that he nevers talks with customers! Gary Neeble
Hi, I see your post is from May. I just joined Fixya this month so, id you're still looking for a solution, I would saythe belt broken or is so stretched the roller isn't spinning. Here is an link to an online guide with illustrations for changing belt. Also check the roller brushes for wear and change if necessary. Hope this helps.

Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Classic. It sounds like the belt may be stretched out and my needs replacing. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. Also check the brushroll, the gray bearing ends with say on either side the words NEW or OLD and both ends need to be identical – new/new and old/old NOT new/old, if the belt and the brushroll are OK then it may be the motor but I don’t think so. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.oreck.com/Customer Service1-800-989-3535 Monday thru Friday Hours are: 7:00 am to 7:00 pm CST Saturday and Sunday Hours Are; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm CST Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL 9100C Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum. The best way to install the belt is to put the belt on the brushroll 1st and then install the brushroll, the brushroll has marking on the top and the bottom of the bearings stating NEW or USED / OLD and install them identical on both sides and then use a belt puller to stretch it onto the motor pulley. The best place to get instructions on how to install the belt and brushroll is the owner’s manual and an owner’s manual is from the Oreck Factory of which I will supply for you listed below or you can download the owner’s manual from the Oreck Website. . I would check with your local Oreck dealer or vacuum dealer in your area to see what is going on. This is most unusual for this to happen.
