Question about Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo 4 1 TB USB 20 Hard Drive

2 Answers

I have a 500 GB Buffalo Drive Station Combo 4 that I'm using with Final Cut Pro on an Apple powerbook G4. I'm storing projects and video clips on the drive. Whenever the drive goes into automatic "stand by" mode, it won't return to active mode. It stays "dead" and I have to shut it down and re-boot. I lose whatever work hasn't been saved at that point. I have several other external drives, including an older model Buffalo drive, and none of them do this to me. Is there is fix for this?

The drive is about a year old. I don't use USB, only firewire. What's an RMA? I've unplugged it and restarted several times. Nothing helps. I don't know how to uninstall "eco mode."

I didn't understand some of the terminology that the first expert used, and the answer didn't seem to apply to my situation. Please read my initial problem completely. I don't use USB, only firewire for mostly retrieving video clips for Final Cut Pro. I can't find any way to access anything called "eco mode" which is what the first expert told me to do.

Hello,

Try plugging your ext. drive directly into the back of the computer, don't use a hub. Should work better. A lot of serial ata adapters (which is what you have inside the fancy box) don't like to work through hubs.

If you aren't using a hub, then try plugging into one. Some G4 PB had finicky USB.

Hi,

How old is your drive. If its new try these before going for a RMA.

Unplugged USB, reconnected - usb device has malfunctioned.
Unplugged USB & power, reconnected - drive and virtual CD now all ok.
Set eco mode to never and then uninstalled eco mode.
Let us know if you have something more to ask else please accept the solution.
Thanks for contacting fixya.com

Best Mac MXF File Converter-Import/Edit Canon MXF Files to ProRes 422 MOV to FCP...

Best Mac MXF File Converter-Import/Edit Canon MXF Files to ProRes 422 MOV to FCP

MXF file format comes from like Panasonic HVX200/HPX300, Canon XF300/XF305, Sony EX camera, etc. It is not compatible with many programs just like Apple Final Cut Pro. So Convert MXF file to FCP MOV Video is a necessary step to do if you want watch your video from your camcorder which export mxf file.

And we know that Apple ProRes 422 , Apple ProRes 4444,introduced in Final Cut Studio, was advertised to one of the codecs to result in less compression and higher data rate/higher quality files for HD editing in Final Cut Pro.

Below is the step-by-step guide for you to quickly Convert/Edit MXF to Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov) Final Cut Pro on Final Cut Studio,Final Cut Pro 7 on Mac.

Step 1. Add MXF videos to Aunsoft MXF Video Converter for Mac.
Connect your MXF Camcorder to iMac with USB 2.0 cable or use card reader to transfer the .mxf files to Apple hard drive disk. Run Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac as the best Mac MXF to FCP Apple ProRes Converter . and click the "Add" button to load .mxf videos.

Step 2. Choose Apple ProRes codec for Final Cut Pro.
Click the "Format" option, choose the Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov) and navigate to the Final Cut Pro group, you will notice that there are profiles with Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422(HQ), Apple ProRes 422(LT), Apple ProRes 422(Proxy), Apple ProRes 4444. Here we choose Apple ProRes 422(HQ) (*.mov) as output format. (The Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy) codec is intended for offline editing and contains 30 percent of the data rate of Apple ProRes 422, and I recommend you to select Apple ProRes 422(HQ), Apple ProRes 422(LT) MOV for outputting.)

Step 3. Merge Canon MXF files. (Optional)
Tick the checkbox for "Merge into one file", and the Mac MXF Video Converter will join and combine the video clips into a single file as output.

Step 4. Convert MXF to Apple ProRes MOV for Final Cut.
Click the convert button under the preview window, the Mac MXF Video converter starts converting MXF videos to Apple ProRes MOV, and joining the MXF files for editing in Final Cut Studio.

After Converting and Merging the MXF files, just import the output Apple PreRes 422 .mov files to Final Cut Pro 7 or Final Cut Pro 6 for editing and the video .Optimize your workflow and save time with the Apple ProRes compression for Final Cut Pro. You can also import the output videos to Final Cut Express (FCE) 4 for editing in full HD.

I have a powerbook G4 and just purchased a Seagate 500 GB external hard drive and i can not drag and drop do i need to format something or what ?

Yes.
You should use the Disc Utility in Macintosh >Hard Drive> Applications>Utilities>Disc Utility to format the new externql to Mac OS Extended Journalrd or non-Journaled is fine.
For video applications I prefer non-Journaled.

Select the drive on the left side of the window to highlight it.
Select the Erase tab. (Top of window)
Select VolumeFormat: and Name:
In Secutity options select Zero Out Data, hit Erase (middle of window) and wait for formatting to complete.
Could be an hour or two depending on disc size.

Does apple poewerbook g4 have webcam installed

No. You gots to get a Macbook or MacBook Pro for the built in web cam.
You can buy a Mac Ally web cam and clip it on the top of the powerbook for a web cam, but it looks odd in contrast to the stream lined architecture of the Power Book.

Is your MacBook as fast as the Lacie Rugged Hard Disk is?

Because solid state drive wasn't available on MacBook Pro at the initial time when it launched. Hard drives on all current Apple laptops are equipped with Sudden Motion Sensor technology. In fact, the Apple laptops that came with Sudden Motion Sensor are: All Intel-based Apple portables such as the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, PowerBook G4 computers starting with PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz), and iBook G4 computers starting with iBook G4 (Mid 2005) have Sudden Motion Sensor technology. You MacBook may not have come with that technology that could be the reason you are unable to connect it.

Video files on MyBook 1TB hard drive lag

So, if you move the file that won't load onto your laptop it then loads? If so can you plug it into another mac and see if it works on that one (if it works it an issue with your macs firwire ports and an os re-install may be needed or your card has been damaged) or can you try another hardrive with your mac (if this works you need to reformat your mybook)? I've bined a HD this year already, not good.
