Make sure that your needle is a good, sometimes there is a slight bend or burr and you do not notice. Replace it and make sure that the flat side of the needle faces the rear of the machine, then hold you top thread end and lower your needle and watch it hook the bobbin thread (when you put your bobbin make sure you have it in your tension slot and there is at least 6 inches) then gently pull your top thread and pull your threads to the back (have at least 6inches or else the needle can unthread.

Needle bar does not move in zig zag mode on singer 457 stylist and will not move to full left with the position lever

Have you changed your presser foot over to the zig zag foot? On some machines it won't work correctly until you change to the correct presser foot.

I am trying to replace monofilm panels in a windsurfing sail, using a Singer 457 zig zag sewing machine. I cannot create a good zig zag seam when the monofilm is sandwiched between two canvas layers.

Joe, you might try a larger needle than you're using. You might also want to try a larger leather needle. You machine should take needles up to a size 18.

It sounds like the needle you're using is having a problem picking up the bobbin thread, and that might solve it.

Singer stylist 7258, will only pick up bobbin on one side when doing zigzag stitch

try using a washable stablizer or interfacing.
if that doesn't help then it's possible that a gear or cam may be worn enough to cause the machine zig zag not to work properly

Singer 7469 will not zigzag

it's possible that a gear or inside cam could be worn or broke, the machine needs to be serviced

I have a Singer Special Zig Zag Model 418. I can

More than likely you have a broken vertical shaft gear.

When you turn the handwheel you should see the sewing hook moving under the bobbin case.

If not, take it to a sewing repair person and it should cost somewhere around $100 to repair.

I have been using the zig zag stitch for appliques and all of a sudden the bottom thread which is a different color is showing on the top. I have rethreaded top and bottom threads, changed needles, cleaned...

it sounds like no bobbin thread tension. there should be some resistance when you pull on the bobbin thread. if there is none or too little you may have some lint or thread caught behind the bobbin case tension spring.

very carefully try and push the tip of a thin pin into the bobbin case tension spring and pick any accumulated thread or lint out.

if the bobbin case spring is clean, try tightening the bobbin tension a little at a time until your zig zag looks ok.

of-course all this is done after checking needle threading and needle for damage.
