Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
This is usually caused by the blu ray drive's optical sensor malfunctioning. Although it is not hard to fix if the console is under warranty you might want to give Sony a call. If it is out of warranty then fixing it yourself would be the best option. Taking the console apart is relatively easy but when you come to take the blu ray drive apart is does become a little harder and you do have to be careful. The item you need is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PS3-BLU-RAY-DRIVE-OPTICAL-DISC-SENSOR-PLAYSTATION-UK-/280553264702?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN

There are some good guides out there to follow if you feel confident in doing it yourself.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

This can be caused by a dirty laser in the drive. Try cleaning the laser with a q-tip and alcohol. If this does not fix the problem, the laser needs to be replaced. Contact Sony and see if the unit is still under warranty.

This is a very common problem with the PS3 and is caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer read the game disk properly.
The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.
The symptoms you describe are typical of a failure of one or both of these lasers.
For more information on how to resolve the problem please view this FixYa Tip on the subject.
