Question about Televison & Video

3 Answers

I have a Toshiba rear projection TV (Model TP43H60, Chassis: TAC9859, Mfg 1998) when I plug it in (to A/C) I hear a click on the power supply and the front power button flashes. There is no display or audio. Thinking the power supply is out but the fuses are Skiff anyone has an idea I'd appreciate it. We had no problems with it prior to this happening; it's a total mystery to us. It was, literally, working perfectly the night before then nothing when I tried to turn it on the next morning, the power light continues to blink red and there is no picture or sound. I can't turn it off either unless I unplug it?? If I replacing the STK ICs, If I replacing it with the substitute IC STK392-110 will be comparable with the original which is look same but has a S letter on the end. Original are STK392-110S and the Question is if the STK392-110 will be Ok??

A few suggestions here---The S does not mean anything.

Are the chips as you look from the back on the board on the far left facing the front of the set?

To determine if the chips (which can) are causing your problem, unplug set, mark all the plugs on that board and remove the board--now unsolder all pins on both chips (18 each) and put board back, if it comes on convergence will be very bad but you will KNOW if the chips are bad.

I can offer instructions on what to do. STK-392-110 CHIPS are used in many sets---they are fine, if you find they are bad and want to upgrade use STK-392-150, NOTHING ELSE.

Taking the chips out of the circuit will tell you if one of them is bad. Most of these sets use two voltages to the chips protected by pico fuses (not usually glass) if one is blown the set detects no voltage and also shuts down.

If you are lucky and take them out of circuit and set comes on you may just have to replace both.

Keep in mind I am in California and available here from 10 - 9 pm pacific time.

Let me know if you have questions by posting a comment right here.

The 3.15 amp ones are for convergence. The only way you are going to KNOW if one of the STK chips is causing this is unsolder both of them! Completely unsolder so no pins from either chip are connected to the board.

Since I pointed you in right direction, remember to rate this solution as very helpful.

Chips out and set comes on means one is bad, be sure to clean old heat grease and replace with new when you do this.

There is no indication that the STKs are the problem yet. This should be fixable, but we need a little more info first. Can you update this with the model number please? Armed with this info, I should be able to provide you with some potential fixes.

Thanks,
Dan

IT is ok, no rating is better than "somewhat helpful" which is what you rated the other two solutions offered here.

If you got it working that is good enough for me

The power led blinks because the source is in protected mode - there's a fault/short on one of its exits and the protection inside the power source has shut it down.
What that fault is can only be found by opening the tv, but on one of this age the capacitors are the first things that pop in my mind. The STK IC's from the convergence board are the second so replacing them is a good idea. Yes, you can use these, the S is there to notify that the circuit has an insignificant improvement over the standard IC - smaller polarisation current. needed)

Sound but no picture

This could be a problem in the vertical sweep circuit, as when the vertical circuit fails, The video or screen will blank out so the picture tubes do not get damaged. In this chassis, I have seen the convergence IC's cause this, or the capacitor in the sweep power supply that feeds the voltage to the vertical IC has failed and blew out the vertical output IC. If you have no solid state repair experience, play it safe and call in a trained tech to assist you in this repair. Good Luck.

Power indicator blinks; but no picture.

Likely to be the STK convergence chips causing a protection circuit to cut in and switch the TV off when turned on. Do you hear clicking when you switch on?

Good Day;

I would suspect the convergence IC's, to confirm this unplug the convergence yoke, all three. If TV comes on IC's are bad. Also, check the little green pico fuses. Good Luck, big IRISH.

Please help me

This may be that the power supply has failed, or there is a short somewhere. Many times, the problems occure in the scan amplifiers and in the power supply.

The set will require shop service to get it working again. Considering the type of set and age, I would be seriously considering a new LCD or Plasma set. Your set may be fairly expensvive to service, and with its age its reliability will be lower.

No picture, sound and flashing red power light...

Pull off the back pressboard. At the bottom left hand corner is the power cord that attaches to the power supply board. There is a white plug that attaches directly to the power cord. With the TV power off, pull this white plug up to disconnect. Then push it back in. Then plug your TV back in and press the power button on the front of the TV. I just did this and it is working fine.
