Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 with a P4 3.0GHz and 3GB DDR2 Ram. About a week ago it started shutting down...cold. Not a Windows shutdown. It is like someone unplugs the power. It will then start booting again. It will restart sometimes, but most times it will keep doing the same thing. If I leave it set for awhile, it will come up for an hour or 2 but then do the same thing. I checked the power supply (w/o a load) and it seems OK. I tried jumping the Pwr On line in the main power connector, but still does it. I tried removing some RAM. I looked at the front panel assy. and checked the switch. It seems OK. It goes to ground when pressed. I am trying to get a used front panel assy. on eBay but that will take a week or more. Just wondered if any of you fellow experts had any other suggestions. I am thinking it could be the motherboard. Is the holding circuit for the power on the MB, on the front panel assy., or in the PS? Anyone know? Thanks all.

It is not the power supply. It is not the HDD. I redid the thermal heatsink compound. I am going to replace the front panel connector. Funny thing...it has been up longer right now than it hs been for days. The only thing I did was to move the power cord to another outlet. If that turns out to be the problem,,,,GRRRRRRR!

If you have enough slots, you can add the RAM to the existing amount. RAM does not have to be matched pairs like it used to be a long time ago.

Dell dimension 5150. wont start

Most times when you have flashing yellow light there is issue ether with cpu or motherboard. Just to be safe test the power supply and if ok then try to replace cpu and go from there. If power supply issue just replace it. Might be easier to take it to pc repair store. Good Luck

Intermittent shut down

That has to do with windows programs. Try doing a system back up if that doesn't work wipe the hard drive and put windows back on it. I have the same system and that has happened to Me. That is what I did. Now it works fine.

Dell Dimension 9200 keeps shutting down and won't start up

the key issue on the uncommanded shutdown is the POWER LED. If upon shutdown, the power LED Flashes AMBER, then the power supply is suspect.

If no flashing amber indication, then the next think I check is the heatsink (Processor overheating) remove, clean and apply arctic Silver heat transfer paste, see if the issuje goes away

Last but not least if the system is failing to boot, and displays a 3 4 diag LED code, then you may have a RAM module that is bad or may just need reseating. Running diags off of the Rersoujrce CD is something to look at too

PNY memory

Hi

Dell Dimension 5150 supports DDR2 400MHz (PC2-3200) and DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4300) unbuffered SDRAM Memory (DIMM). You may install a total of four DIMMs in capacities of 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB. The maximum memory supported is 4GB.

From your query, I think the obvious question is; What is specification of the PNY DIMM and/or does the PNY DIMM meet the requirements for Dimension 5150?

Check for memory configuration and installation procedures for Dimension 5150 - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/parts1.htm#wp1364711

The Chipset used on Dimension 5150 is Intel 945G Express. I am not aware of specific compatibility issues regarding the Intel 945G and PNY Memory modules. However, there may really be known issues that I am not aware of.

To proceed, ensure that the PNY Memory is compatible with Dimension 5150. If not, install compatible (memory type, speed, capacity) DIMMs.

Let me know if further help is needed.

Mike
