Question about Meade ETX-125EC (500 x 127mm) Telescope

2 Answers

I have a Meade ETX-125 PE telescope, the RA gear set has been striped! (inside the base) where can i buy the replacement gears? preferably metal ones as the ones from the factory will not last if the scope goes haywire and goes against its stop!

    Thanks Joe,

Actually i was shocked when i called them, they had no idea, and basically told me i should try your website, they didn't even offer for me to send the unit in to them!

i have obviously been frantically trawling the internet trying to find these simple gears, i have looked at Bucks Gears but they seem to only carry the gears for the fork arm.

i have only had the scope for around 15 months, and i have this sick feeling that Meade are only making "throw away" scopes, i can't afford to get it supercharged or anything like that (redession has hit hard), i am a tech support manager myself so i am good with my hands, i just need to try and source spare parts. I have also tried Telescope warehouse, they have nothing.

the gear is definately stripped, i had it out of the carrier and noticed a flat spot.

please help! i really like the look of this scope, but have never ever got it to track properly with autostar, the grinding and popping sounds just got worse and worse. (when i stripped the base, just about every screw/nut cable connector was loose.

Again Joe, i really appreciate this.

    Cheers Joe,

i did just that, and as a warning to anyone else thinking of buying a Meade product here is the way it went. At first he told me that they no longer make the scope, he says they still sell them! then he said to return the scope and for $550!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i could have a new one. i told him that was unacceptable as i had only used it twice and was new except for one broken gear. Then he back tacked and gave a favourable answer, basically to e mail him a picture of the failed part then he would see if the techs would sell me the part. if all else fails then send it back for $150 for a repair including parts! it was only when i started to refuse and be disappointed that i got anywhere. Joe, again, thank you for all your help! a brilliant site!

    Cheers Joe,

Unfortunately i did just that and to my suprise Meade came back and said they did not carry those parts, and suggested i contact this site! also Weasner. They never suggested i send the scope back either.

to be honest, i love the scope but was shocked when i opened the base, just about every screw and bolt was loose, i inspected the gears and noticed one of the plastis gears (near the output gear) had been stripped and was flat for about 20 degrees of the gear (the gear is useless).

i am tech support manager myself and this repair would be very easy for me if i could only find parts for the thing. i hope Meade are not now in the business of selling throw away scopes!

i am at my wits end now, i cannot afford to have it "supercharged" by Dr Clay. (recession has hit hard). all i would like is to be able to buy this simple plastic part or replace all the plastic with steel gears. i have looked at telescope, i have looked on bucks gears, but they only seem to do the big scopes and the drive on fork arm.

please help. It seems that you guys are right on it, from my many hours of trawling the net, you keep popping up!

Again, thanks for the help so far.

Meade WILL take it back for repair, and might even sell you the part.

Call back and try another tech, and ask to speak to a supervisor. Tell him you already have it disassembled and just need the part.

Great-------- now wait 2 days and call them back AGAIN. (hope you have the name of the person you spoke to today.)

They sell these "refurbished" on their ON _LINE store here: There is one there now for $675 Dollars. They DO HAVE the repair part............. keep pressing them and get them to send you the part.... if need ed don't hesitate to email their Marketing Director and the CEO.

    Good luck, and clear skies!

My problem is the telescope can not rotate to the left and when it does i hear gears noise

The worm gear in the base may have come loose. You can either return it to Meade for repairs or open up the bottom and try to see what is either loose or broken.

Yes, Dr. Clay supercharges ETX scopes--

You can also send them into Meade. Depends on how old it is and what is wrong if they will agree to repair it:

There are some big scope dealers in Europe that also provide this servive if they SELL Meade scopes. Call them.

Meade ETX-60 Horizontal drive

The AZ worm gear is not engaging the gears. There is a spring next to the gear which applies pressure -- open up the base and see if the spring is loose or broken.

My scope can't make a full (360 degree) turn even when the RA lock is off. I recently just re-tightened the screws holding thre gears because they were loose. Could this be the problem?

Thanks for the reply. When you tighten the screws too much it's clearly causing the gear teeth to mesh too tightly, or there may be an over-long screw protruding through somewhere which needs grinding down.

Check with Meade customer care, sometimes they're aware of issues like these and will have a repair kit available or an information sheet which helps to prevent the problem recurring.

Azimuth motor stalling missing the electronic home sensor

Check for binding in the gears; my 10" had aluminium chips in the fork base that jammed the gear. Cured by removing the RA manual adjust assembly - was useless anyway, as it could only be used with the RA unlocked. One setscrew in the fork base holds it in place, just loosen and pull up.

ETX125 PE new model. Elevation has totally stopped.

Could be that the DEC motor driver has died. That could be verified by swapping the connections between the RA and DEC. If the DEC now moves, then that is the problem. If not, then the DEC motor is bad.
