Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Realistic (Radio Shack) model STA-430 AM/FM Stereo Receiver. Erratic sound-- cuts in / cuts out, high static. Turning "balance" knob all way to left or right kills all sound. NEED to replace "balance" potentiometer. Trying to locate service manual, and location to purchase potentiometer.

If the receiver is a new one (a couple of years) I suggest you don't replace the balance potentiometer. It's a potentiometer with rare use so the inner carbon film can't be destroyed. I suggest you to open the case and use a contact cleaner spray (clear, without oil) and spray direct at the potentiometer. Turn it all the way from left to right many times. When it will come dry you will see the diference. As far as the suggestion for clear (without oil) contact cleaner spray, I insist on that because the lubricating oil will cause a trap for the dust and will ask for cleaning again and again. Also for potentiometers with rare use there is no need for lubricating oil.

I think that this solution is much easier than chanching a potentiometer, since the device is not too old.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Realistic STA-2270 Stereo Receiver

The pivot that balances the fm signal meter has jammed, it would have to be taken apart, the outer lens removed to attempt a repair, this is a very tricky operation, if you hit the receiver on the side nearest to the meter, the needle should move back and forth freely,"indicating the meter is good" but if it fails to move the mechanical part of the meter is faulty.

Get a lot of static when try and turn volume down low.....in fact, sometimes it is hard to get sound when you turn the volume down....it is either full blast or silent.....lots of static like noise when...

This is an easy fix with a can of volume knob cleaner i think its called. You should be able to get it at radio shack. You just spray it into the volume knob and let it dry. The instructions are on the can.

This model is notorious for cold solder joints. Chances are it needs some touch-up soldering.

Yes it should be very easy with use of the ear phone jack - depending on the model of course but generally all you need is an ac/dc power supply, the antenna connection, and for connection to receiver you can connect via FM or hard wire.
FM: as in your car pick an FM station frequency that is clear (no station on it) lets say 88.1 then set your home receiver on 88.1 and there you have it.
DIRECT: purchase a stereo 3.5mm headphone cable with two RCA male plugs at the other end. A faily common cable found in dollar stores or for five times the price at Walmart/Radio Shack etc.. Plug the 3.5mm plug into the 'headpone' jack of the satellite radio and the RCA plugs into the rear of your home receiver - usually a 'aux/line in plug" or "tape in" plug then turn the knob on the receiver to "aux or tape" selector. Bingo you should hear satellite radio all over the house....if the volume is UP! Take care Frank
