Question about Mitsubishi WS-55809 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I have a Mitsubishi WS-55809 and the volume went out. My husband checked it out with a detachable radio and got volume to work through it with DVD playing but not with Reg. t.v. Then we shut it off. When we went back to turn it on to check it. Now we get time light blinks when we hit power on and it shuts itself right off immed. I pushed menu and input and code error code 2 blinks and 4 blinks. Please let me know how we can fix our t.v.

Ok, how do we check this out to see if this is the issue. And then what can be done to fix it if it can be fixed.

My husband checked this out and there is nothing he can see as in liquid or anything else odd. What do we do now?

First: unplug the set and plug it back in and try to turn on, if it shuts off repeat the self check feature.

2,4 is a problem in the Vertical circuit of the set--loss of vertical sweep; combined with a audio problem it does not make sense.

There is something you should be aware of: These sets have 3 picture tubes and each has a sealed area full of a clear liquid to keep the face of the tubes cool during operation.

The liquid is called Glycol and is like antifreeze but much more concentrated and toxic.

These sets also have a HISTORY of the liquid leaking out and getting on the circuit boards--shorts things out and causes all kinds of odd problems.

There is a easy way to check for this first---I can tell you how and what to look for.

    Here is what to do:

    1) remove entire front speaker grill beneath screen--it should pull out and is held in with pegs made of plastic.

    2) behind it dead center you will find a small inspection plate with 4-6 Philips screws. Remove the plate and with a flashlight look at the front 3 inches of each of the 3 large boards.

    3) Glycol will if present be seen in two ways: a white looking discoloration like battery cables in a car but not so pronounced----Middle board is vertical circuit etc---it may look like clear liquid or model airplane glue----IF YOU SEE ANY LIQUID DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH YOUR HAND===you can absorb it into your body on contact.

    4) on right board (as seen from front of set which is green in color) look for any white powder like substance or discoloration of solder connections on top of the board---the connections should look bright and shiny and not dull gray or discolored looking.

You have to look very carefully, it only takes a small amount of this to cause damage, less than a teaspoon can do big damage.

Let me know if you find damage of this type----damage will if present appear in first three inches or so from front of set on the boards.

The damage is easy to miss if you do not look carefully.

This if still 2,4 means something in Vertical circuit is bad in some way--set detects no vertical deflection and shuts down.

It MAY be fixable in your home if you get a good tech---nothing you are going to fix yourself.

I have seen either a failure of a part in the vertical circuit OR I have also seen bad solder connections on three very tiny boards at the picture tubes---they connect the deflection yokes on the picture tubes to the chassis---a good tech will know to look for this as it is sometimes a issue---they cannot be seen from front of set and are in the black plastic housing around the neck of each tube---called a yoke.

So this will cost a lot to fix? Probably not worth it I am assuming. We just bought it used for $100.00 3 weeks ago. And it worked just fine till one day the Volume went really high on us. Then it worked fine for another week or so and then it went out completely.

Someone likely knew it had a problem and sold it to get rid of it.

I would estimate repair between 150 and 300 depending on what problem is.
