Question about U-Line Icemaker

1 Answer

I HAVE A ULINE CLR 60 Iice maker which was working fine until I let the condensr get too dirty. i cleaned the condenser and cona't get it to make ice. If I leave it run for a few days it will begun to make ice right away the cubes are thin eventually it comes close to normal but after a few days the ice does not continue. Ice well gets cold and everthing sounds good, i adjusted the ice thickness taking the 24 hrs to let it normalize and thought it was fixed but afeter 48 hours the bin was em[ty and the ice mold was not cold . Any ideas

steady led and conderser fan runs predictibly, The only thing might be is the hot gas bypass valve, I ssume this is pressure operated, but it does show up on the sxhematic. Thanks Fred

Thanks for all the informatoin. I'll do some troubleshooting and see if I can pinpoint the problem. The condenser was heavily clogged so that may have been the start of the problems. What is the adjustment on the temp switch for the bin? It was pegged in one direction with no indication of temperature setting..

I need to ask if you have any LED light indications other than steady per these indications:

1. Steady light - The control board has power to it. There are no sensing problems and operation is normal.
2. Slow flash - The control board has detected a sensor problem. This will happen if the thermistor’s plug is disconnected from the control board. This will also happen if the thermistor fails open.
3. Rapid flashing - This indicated that the control board is receiving a high heat signal from the thermistor. This can be caused by a dirty
condenser, inadequate air flow (unit installed behind closed doors), failed condenser fan motor, etc.

Since you stated that you cleaned the condenser before this problem manifested I would once again check to see that the condensor fan is running at full speed or is even running at all.

- If the condensor is super hot.... you have an airflow problem.

If the bypass valve is stuck open it can also keep the tray warm.

Just a note.. if you have a small floor fan and you need ice direct it toward the bottom of the unit and see if ice production returns to normal. You may have an intermittent condensor fan. (loose connection?)

If you re-check the fan and still have problems there are other things to check. Just respond here and we can go from there. I do have the service manual hard copy.

    Hi Fred,

I should have asked this the first time but at this point I am assuming if the condensor fan is running that the compressor is also running.

The therory of operation is this:

    7. When the freeze cycle is completed, the control de-energizes the water pump and

the condenser fan motor. The compressor remains running during the harvest cycle.

The control then energizes the hot gas solenoid valve and water solenoid valve for the duration of the harvest cycle. The hot refrigerant gas warms the evaporator causing the cubes to slide, as a sheet, off the evaporator and into the storage bin. At the same time, the water trough is being purged with fresh water.

    8. At the conclusion of the harvest cycle, the machine returns to a new freeze cycle. The compressor continues to run. The water pump and condenser fan motor are energized. The hot gas solenoid valve and water solenoid valves are de-energized (closed).

The symptom your describing with the compressor running (assumption end of harvest cycle) is that possibly the hot gas solenoid is not closing. This could have been your problem all along when you decided you needed to clean the condensor.

These are the resitance checks for all windings and coils:

FF7.5HBK Compressor Start Winding 12.0 OHMS

FF7.5HBK Compressor Run Winding 2.9 OHMS

CLR60 Water Valve Coil Resistance 280 OHMS

    Bypass Coil Resistance 380 OHMS

Pump Motor Winding Resistance 71.5 OHMS

Here is a note about the stand pipe:

    4. No Ice Production

    Cause Remedy

    - No water supplied to unit Check that water is connected and

    turned on.

    - Stand pipe not inserted in water trough Insert stand pipe securely into water

    - Re-circulating pump is defective Replace re-circulating pump

I still think we are dealing with a bypass valve problem. HINT: It is de-energized closed. You can unhook it for a brief period just to see if the tray gets cold. If not... give it some good strong taps with the handle of a hammer and see if the tray gets cold. If it does then your certain the bypass valve has failed / is sticking. The sticking hot gas bypass valve would have to be de-energized for the condensor fan to run per system operation. So again.. it may not be closing when it is de-energized.

Forgot to mention the hot gas valve and the water inlet valve both have red and while wires on them.

Fred if you don't have a parts listing the part number of the Hot gas bypass valve is 2749-S60 The cost will run anywhere from $71.00 to $143.00 depending on source. Average is about $103.00 + shipping.

The bin temp switch should be at the 10 O'clock position. The ice thickness factory setting is +1.

Just so you can add this to your troubleshooting checks if you ever need this info someday:

    Compressor Pins

To measure start winding resistance, measure across the C - S pins.

To measure run winding resistance, measure across the C - R pins. These pins should never measure any resistance to ground. This would indicate a shorted compressor.

    12. Unit Not Freezing (compressor and fan operating)

    Cause Remedy

    Little or no cooling:

    1. Check sealed system for leak or restriction / NOTE: See chart of suction pressures in manual.

    2. Bypass valve stuck in open position / Replace bypass valve

    2 more part numbers:

    Bin Thermostat is PN 2708

Bin Thermostat Tube is PN 11841

I do need to correct a spelling error... the hot gas bypass valve and the water valve both have RED and WHITE wires on them.

----Just in case you have not figured this out... the hot gas bypass valve is part of the sealed system and will require the sealed coolant system be opened (i.e freon. pressure gages, vacuum pump and torch required)

I guess that is about it at this point.. I will watch for any future reponses.

    Good luck Fred.

Scottsman Ice machine? I just learned this trick. You need CLR or something like that to remove hard water deposites. open the front then top and the right side. on the bottom in the back on the right side there is a wire going into what looks like a rubber boot. Gently tug on that plug and you will pull out the electric eye sensor. Clean that with CLR, then gently wash and reinstall. The emitter is located where the control panel is in the back on the bottom. You can't see this very well but you can feel it. Same thing gently tug on the wire and the boot pulls out. Then Clean with CLR and wash off with clean water and reinstall. What is happening is this the light or sensor is dirty so it thinks it's already full of ice.

Ice machine not making ice

You will have a 60-90 fill cycle, then circulate, then another 60-90 fill, then on to ice making. When Ice making starts all remaining functions come on, such as the condenser fan, and compressor. Check for these functions after the initial fill/rinse/fill has finished. if the condenser fan comes on but the compressor does not, you very well may need a control board located behind the on/off switch panel. With constant heavy loads/usage, and or a dirty condenser coil the compressor relay solder joints often become weak and short open on the board, this can sometimes be fixed by just cleaning and re-soldering the relay joint on the board. ULine CLR2160S00 was making ice then the icemaking started to slow then none at all had refrigerant replaced last year and everything else seems to be working fine,,, just no ice

Does the ice maker get water? Could the fill line be blocked? I found on my freezer ice had formed at the end of the tube and once I removed the ice it has worked fine since.
