You need to set up the wireless internet connection in the TV to connect to a wireless router and then the TV will download the firmware update over the internet.
It sounds like feedback from somewhere else other than your tv like a overhead light or a blinder suggest using a surge suppressor to help block spikes of this sort.
On the back panel of your tv you will see two audio inputs labeled AUDIO TO HI-FI. Plug your surround sound audio jacks, ( red and white ) into that. Plug your video jack ( yellow ) into what ever number input you are going to use for dvd, if needed. This will allow you to watch tv and hear it in your surround sound. You should also go to menu- then- audio option and turn off your tv internal speakers, this will allow your tv remote to control your volume of surround sound. Hope this helped.
Resetting the tv by unplugging is definitely a good idea. dusting doesn't hurt either, because the dust can sit on the circuit board. when the dust heats up through use, it can cause damage to the circuits that unplugging and replugging won't fix :-)
If it is only a few days over the warranty call immedieatly, if it is much over that then these newer Hitachis are in my opinion not worth repair, and I mean the newer under $1000 units the parts are near the origianl cost sometimes.
