Question about Singer 5050 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Singer 5050 won't zigzag stitch

I have an old Singer 5050 that I bought about 10 years ago and hasn't been used for quite some time until I got it out recently.  It will straight stitch just fine, but it won't zigzag stitch at all.  When I change the stitch width to any of the zigzag settings it just goes in a straight line.  My stitch length is not at zero, either.  What's the problem?

There's a flap on the top for a "pattern module," but I can't see any sort of finger.  I took it out and put it back in according to the manual instructions but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.  I'm not sure if that's the same thing you mean.

same thing going on with my Singer 5050, any luck?

The machine sews beautifully on the straight, but if any other setting is attempted then I get only the straight stitch. None of the zig-zags or pattern stitches are appearing in the fabric at all. I've fiddled with the settings and combinations of them, and even opened her up, but I don't see anything obvious that is preventing it from working properly.

It probably needs a thorough cleaning and oiling. If it hasn't been used for quite some time, the old oil has turned to glue and is preventing the parts from moving like they should.

SOURCE: Singer 5050

I was hoping you would have got another answer, I have a mechanical sewing machine ( Singer 5040) with the exact same problem. However, if i use the programed stitches I can sew a zigzag. If i do it manually and set the zigzag width to any width ( even the widest) I get only the same straight stitch, and no mater what length I select it is the same too, very close to gether about 1 1/2 inch stitch.
I took my entire maching apart to expose inside both top side and underneath, nothing apeared loose or broke and i oiled it up. I bought a new bobbin holder and still the same effect. So it has to be something serious is my conclusion...sounds like a trip to Sears to me...LOL

SOURCE: Singer Touch Tronic 2001 Sewing Machine Stuck on Sewing Straight Stitch Only

I have the Singer Touch Tronic 2001. I bought it used for $50. It has the manual and all the parts. However, the manual refers to lifting the top console to access the stitch width selector dial and to change the pattern selector discs. I cannot seem to lift this console up even the manual says that it is hinged for easy access to these parts. Can anyone describe how to lift the console up? Or send a picture or video of this process?

Most appreciated!

Check to be sure there are no threads caught in the hook area that may be preventing the machine from working. Short of finding some obstructions, it probably needs service even if it hasn't been used. May or may not be reparable.

I just bought a Singer Golden Touch & Sew at an estate sale. The straight stitch works great but it will not do a true zig-zag. It starts at wide width and the zig-zag narrows steadily for about one...

Go to and under customer support, you can download a free copy of your manual. Save it to your computer, then enlarge the diagrams, it is so much easier to see the details. The machine is a little more complicated than we are used to. It will also teach you how to lubricate and clean this little beauty. Good luck, have fun. Happy New Year.

Unless you want to deal with the little screws to take it apart, you may take it to an authorized singer service dealer. Look in your local yellow pages under sewing machines.
