Question about FrancisFrancis! X1 - Stainless Steel Espresso Machine

3 Answers

My FrancisFrancis X1 is about 4 years old. It will not heat the water but everything else seems to work. I have taken it apart to see if I can figure out if it is the thermostat or the boiler but I am stuck with it open and do not really know what to do next. Can you help me? Joanne

Could I get some further information on how to diagnose and fix this problem? The water does not heat, the bottom light does not go on but it pumps water well in both the coffee and steam mode...it just does not heat up.

  • mcflygrl Aug 30, 2010

Thank you for your reply. This confuses me more because it is pumping water through before it heats it up and even if I leave it on for a long time it never heats and if I turn the pump on it will deliver the water through either the coffee or steam whichever setting that I have it on. So I think that the thermostat or the boiler is broken, or both. How can I diagnose this? Thank you!

The X1 uses a pump system with an automatic refill system.
This means that it has a separate tank that heats water to the optimum temperature for espresso making.
Only after the water has reached the right temperature is it sent through the coffee holder at the correct temperature, making sure that perfect cup of coffee!
The heater is not working.Or the switch which you press for brewing. Both has to be checked. Keep updated.Thanks.

Hi, what you need to do is to find the heating element which will look like a small electric burner on a stove top, same type of material. It should have a wire connection at each end of it. When the thermostat is turned on to heat, this element is energized with 120 volts and will start to warm up and get hot just like the element on a stove top or oven.If this element has a lot of white old water deposits that have built up on it over the years, it has probably caused it to fail at some point in the element. It has to have continuity through it ( no breaks ) for it to work. If you have a electrical meter or know someone who may, they can check it in a couple of seconds to see if it is broken internally. I am positive this is the problem. Clean it up and look for any cracking any where on it and this will tell you it is open internally and will need to be replaced. If no meter, take it down to a appliance parts house retail, and ask if they will do a continuity check for you, and I am sure they will not charge you to do this as it is a very quick test. Take along your model number, serial number and name of this espresso machine and they may have the part right there so you can get yours up and running, or may have to order one for you. Yes, this is probably the problem, but I am not ruling out the stat just yet. The thermostat does bring it on and control the amount of heat it gets, but I am sure as this element has been in sediment water for 4 years so it has collected lots of deposits and has shorted out. Please do this check and get it back on line. Now if for some reason they say it has continuity, and no breaks, then you will need to go to the thermostat as this is next in line to be the part that keeps the heat from the element if it has failed. This is why you need to check this element over well and clean it up to check for any signs of cracking. Have it checked with a meter before you buy a new one. 99% of the time, the element has failed. Please be kind when rating as I know you will. If you need anymore help on this please feel free to contact me by my user name below here at FIXYA. Com.
Sincerely,

Hi,
Does the bottom light come on? The light is connected across the heating element and so if it is on the heating element is getting power. The steam power bypasses the thermostat and uses the pressure switch to shut off the heating element. So if the light comes on when you press the steam switch but off when it isn't it is most likely your thermostat causing problems, if it never lights it is most likely the pressure switch.

OK, so if I replace the pressure switch then my X1 will start heating the water again? I do not understand it but I will try it. How do I locate the pressure switch on my X1?

It is located next to the thermostat.Copper colour thick wiring you can see. That is connected to the same.It will be of Copper colour. The image above just gives you idea not exactly how it looks.

    This is thermostat.
Next to this is the valve. You can copper turning wire that is the valve.

This my last try.If i inspect the machine i could easily solve the problem.
Since you say it is the problem with thermostat or boiler i will go with you.

A thermostat opens and closes a circuit to furnish current based on temperature. Heat flexes one of the two metals and causes them to pull the contacts apart, opening the circuit and stopping current from passing.Thermostats can be used to turn a heating element or a motor on or off. In fact, thermostats are used as overload protectors that open a circuit and turn off a motor if it overheats or overloads.

A thermostat in controls electricity to operate the heating element.
    To test the thermostat:
1)Use a continuity tester or multitester to check the thermostat, placing a probe at each end.
    2) If defective, remove and replace the thermostat with one of the same rating.

If the thermostat is working then the problem is with boiler you can go with it to replace it.Boiler or thermostat cant be broken it can only be defective,It doesn't means broken.

post a comment for further assistance.

Thank you for using fixya have a nice day:-)

Dehumidifier not collecting water

most probable cause of a dehumidifier not collecting water when it appears to run fine otherwise is a dirty heat exchanger. It is unlikely that a huge spread in the time a unit works is caused by failure of the compressor of loss of refrigerant. On the other hand, people use their units in very varied conditions of dust in the environment with expected short to long operating times before failure. Here's how to fix this problem in two steps.

Step 1: Determine if your compressor and refrigerant sealed unit is operational
Step 2: If Step one is negative, dispose of the unit - specialized equipment is required to repair or recharge a compressor. If step one is positive, then clean the heat exchanger.

Some of that water must have gotten inside amd shorted something. If this is less then 1 year, it would be under warranty. It iwll have to be taken apart and checked.

Washer won't drain - completely.

I have been having the exact same problem in a top load Kenmore 80, starting about a year ago when I replaced the pump because the old one, (30 years old), finally seized it's bearings.

The new pump design has some rough edges near the water exit port and lint slowly collects there until it stops it from draining properly. Since the lint clumps do move around a bit, when the problem first starts occurring it is an intermittent problem, but as more lint accumulates it gets worse and worse.

The old pump couldn't be taken apart, (and never need to be taken apart), but the new one can be disassembled rather easily and when the lint clumps are removed everything works great for another month or two.

The pump is the so called direct replacement from Sears, for the washing machine that they sell, but obviously is not well suited for machines like mine that do not have lint filters.

I suspect they want to render my machine obsolete so that I buy a new one, after all they don't make much money selling 1 washer every 30+ years, especially if it rarely needs service. Why else would they sell pumps that don't work in place of pumps that worked well and lasted over 20 years.
