Unable to open my files on my external hard disk pls help

if you cant get to this external hard drive to view its files
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
hope this helps

Drive stopped working

I had the same problem - green light on power cord but when plugged in the green light would go off and the hard drive would do nothing. I took it into Geek Squad finally and it turned out that the problem was hard drive casing, which I had to have replaced.

External drive seems to freeze up everything, including desktop when USB plugged in

Do not panic. The problem is with the controller in the external case and not the HD itself. Open the case and remove the hard drive. Bring it to circuit city or best buy and invest in a new HIGH QUALITY external case for your hard drive. An associate at either of these stores will be able to tell you the exact case you will need.(SATA,E-IDE,IDE,ect...) DO NOT BUY the cheapo $10 cases you can get on the net. There is a reason some cases cost more then others and the main reason is the quality of the internal components and the durability of them. Install Your HD in your new case(very simple) and you will be up and running in no time.
I Hope this helps you out and you appreciate my help enough to remember to rate me FixYa when you are all fixed up.

Maxtor one Touch 300GB no steady green light

Hi,

The USB Isn,t supplying/providing enough Power to the device.
Search e-bay or similar for a 2 into 1 USB Cable.
Then power the unit with 2 USB Ports on the Computer.
2 x USB Into 2 x Sockets On P.C. 1 x Into Device Drive.
This will be enough power to operate the Device Correctly.

I,ve done this on several external Drives, never failed for Me.

Western Digital 120 GB Hard Drive

Well usually external hard drives are just a regular hard drive in an encolsure! You can try to mount the hard drive to a regular pc using the ide/sata connector(Im not real sure which interface your drive will use). From there you can tell wether its the actual drive that is giving trouble or just the USB enclosure! Most of the times with those name brand external drives its a lil complicated to figure out how to take it apart to take out the hard drive. What you can also do is try(if you get it open) to see if you can unplug the hard drive from the enclosure then power on the enclosure and see if the lights come up green(or whatever color it uses to indicate ready)! if it does then power off the enclosure then re-connect the drive to the enclosure and power on again! Maybe that works! Removing the drive might void your warranty, proceed at your own risk! Good Luck regards, babb
