Question about Garmin GPSMAP 295 GPS Receiver

Garmin 295 frequently freezes up. Only by taking battery out (difficult in an open cockpit biplane while trying to stay upright) and restarting unit will it un-freeze.

Again, this problem is for a Garmin 295 GPS, NOT a Nuvi. This is a unit designed for use in aviation, not automobiles, though an auto program is an available option. Please reconsider question and solution. Thanks.

Not happy with your answers. Not applicable to this product and since Garmin no longer supports it, they don't feel the need to answer technical questions. If I wanted to check on Garmin's Help site, I could have done so without sending you $6.00.

Hi,
A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve freezing up issue.

Hard Reset procedure:
This procedure has been known to (but doesn't always) delete your favorites so back them up beforehand: From the nuvi drive, copy x:/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx to your backup location. After the hard reset, copy current.gpx back to the same folder on the nuvi but rename it temp.gpx (important). On the next power cycle, the favorites will be read from temp.gpx into the non-user accessible memory area on the nuvi where they are actually stored (current.gpx is only a shadowed backup of your favorites)

Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit
*Note that a "power-cycle" (or power-on/power off sequence) on the nuvi 8x0/8x5 units consists of removing, then reinserting the battery into the unit. Using the power switch on the unit to power it off only puts it into a "sleep" mode.

Power the unit off. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. Reset all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

post a comment for further assistance.
Thank you for using fixya have a nice day:-)

Only screen is the garmin logo with the battery charge icon. When power button is pressed another icon appears for 20s: a picture of the garmin unit linked to a charger then back to the first screen.

Don't know if this will help but it might be worth trying, especially if you just did a software update. I have a 520 and it gets frequent software updates. After an update it ends up just showing the Garmin screen and seems to be bricked because nothing else works - even the off button doesn't work. The solution is to just let it sit showing the Garmin screen for five or ten minutes so it can process and load the new software which seems to take a long time. It eventually opens onto the main screen.

Garmin 295 forerunner will not turn on

Hello,

Did you mean the Forerunner 205?
It is most likely that the battery has died in the unit or there may be a problem with the battery charger.
The internal battery in the Forerunner 205 is not user replaceable and the unit would need to go back to a Garmin repair for replacement.
Please call Garmin Tech Support for assistance.

Batteries will not power unit

Check If the batteries are fresh and in the right way Always a chance of one not in there right or dirty contacts If they are then if the unit runs on the charger this indicates a hardware problem and you will need to send it in to Garmin for repair or refurbishment. They usually have a set fee that covers every thing. You may get your unit back or a diferant one if they can't repair it.

My Garmin MAP 295 won't power up. Third time in 5 years.

I have discovered an intermittent problem on my 10 year old 295 when powered by batteries.
It appears that the chrome plating is de-laminating from the battery contacts that are either side of the back panel attachment hole. At first glance it looks perfect but if you run a fingernail or other small item across the face of the contact you will see and hear a movement as if there a a loose layer of foil over it. This is causing all manner of faults including 'external power lost, shut-down in 30 seconds' when the external power was not even connected at all!

Garmin gpsmap 295 will not run from internal battery power

I had the same problem. Reluctantly, I removed the batteries and the 8 phillips screws from the the case back perimeter. Be careful on opening. The unit is designed to open from the top and hinge at he bottom to keep the ribbon cables from being stressed. The unit should open nicely and lie flat on the table with the two bottom halves butted against each other. Get a magnifier and ensure the printed circuit board attached to the bottom half has all 3 screws. (I found one missing that has 2 functions - securing the board and delivering battery power. Mine had wedged against a piece of clear plastic...it was hard to find!!!) I carefully removed the wedged screw and returned to the circuit board left most attach point. Close up the unit and we were back in GPS heaven. Battery power restored!!!! and my $250.00 still in my pocket. Yipppeee.

When checking battery - garmin freezes when using "exit" button

I would go to the garmin site and update the firmware. The 850's had a loop problem in the software recently so it is worth a try.
