yes you do. XP would ask for serial and such unless you use restore CD.

  • Dung Nguyen May 08, 2008

    insert CD to drive.

    reboot

    boot from CD

    follow instruction on screen

  • Dung Nguyen May 08, 2008

wont ask to select too much ...most are common sense.

if your not sure... always go with the "recommended" option.

  • Dung Nguyen May 12, 2008

Did it give you the option to format the C: ?

  • Dung Nguyen May 12, 2008

It should say something warning you that all files will be deleted and are you sure you want to continue.

Are you using a recovery CD or an Windows CD ?

  • Dung Nguyen May 12, 2008

you don't want media center. You want something like "OS recovery CD"

Media center will repair/reinstall "media" stuff not OS.

  • Dung Nguyen May 12, 2008

ask your friends for a XP installation CD :) ... forget this recovery thingy.

I can NOT download ANYTHING not even the fixya what can be the problem?

Hey Charlie, try the following:

  • Make sure you have the most up-to-date version of your browser by checking the version under "Help-About" in the menus.
  • go to links below for Internet Explorer and Firefox and Chrome
  • Download Web Browser Internet Explorer
  • Download Firefox Free Web Browser
  • Get fast free web browser (Google Chrome)
  • You might also use the above links to install a new browser to see if that makes a difference in downloading.
  • If you still cannot download even from these sites, try to right-click on the link and select the "Save link as..." option from the menu that pops open and try saving it to your desktop.
This is the simplest start to your solution because I am not able to look at your computer. I hope it helps!

Getrid of popus and fake security warnings

When you are browsing the internet and suddenly a window pop up with different messages for example" free update for your computer ","scan your computer with free anti-virus". May be some pop-ups messages helpful for you but you should read first in detail before clicking it. Pop-ups basically an advertiser message or unwanted program and website that might be disturb your computer performance.
If you are working with Internet Explorer and want to block the pop-ups windows and unwanted messages. Open the Internet Explorer and click on Tools menu and go to Pop-up Blocker option, here you can Turn Off Pop-up Blocker to block pop-up from all websites. But you have option to allow some websites for pop-up. For this purpose open the Pop-up Blocker Setting. Here you can add some specific websites name to allow for pop-up and click Add. If you feel any problem to block any pop-up message due to some problem, simply click on the X at the right top of the pop-up windows.

I want to know if I need to update to IE 11? Why do I get a pop-up everyday telling me to do that?

Use Caution. Pop-ups can appear for various reasons and they may not be legitimate.

To check for updates for your Windows computer, simple go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Update and choose to check for updates. If you have updates, go ahead and choose to install them.

It's important for the security of your computer to have an up-to-date browser, which is why you should get the newest, especially since they are free or included like IE (Internet Explorer).

Other good browsers include:

Firefox

Internet explorer freezes

Hi!

Internet Explorer is probably one of the least stable web browsers available. You best solution would be to download and use another.
Firefox is a great option. It also allows you to keep your bookmarks and settings from Internet Explorer.
Download Firefox Free Web Browser
Chrome is also another great option.
Get fast free web browser

Either option will work on your current system. And provide much more functionality, speed, stability, options and more.

Good luck!

Computer pop ups?

Not the most descriptive problem.

So lets guess, me thinks when you are using a internet browser program to access web sites like www.fixya.com?? Then at random times additional browser windows pop up trying to sell something etc.

Most likely your PC is infected. Stop using Internet Explorer (IE) and use Chrome/Firefox. Then with in your new browser add the extension/plugin Ad Block or Ad Block Plus both are free.

Then head on over to www.filehippo.com and download ccleaner and marlwarebytes. Install one at a time, malwarebytes first. Have it update and then select full scan/ Come back in a few hours and check all the little boxes it found problems on.

I can't read my email where I've been told that I need to unblock my pop-ups. How do I unblock my pop-ups?

It sounds very fishy that your email is requesting you to turn off your pop up blocker. Try scanning your computer with a free adware scanner. I recommend adaware or spybot s&d.
If that is not your problem, your pop up blocker is usually located in the tools section under add ons if your using firefox.
In internet explorer, its under tools and disable pop up blocker.

My old decktop pc browser files are corrupt and cannot use it to establish connection to the internet.

Online Scans
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

In your next post please include:
  • Panda Activescan Log
  • Ewido Log
  • A new Hijackthis! Log

Internet Explorer Problem

Ok. be careful on pop-ups dude especially if its unknown ones. DON'T YOU DARE OPEN THOSE or your PC will be infested of various worms and trojans. I suggest that you should scan your computer first with Antivirus software( make sure it is up-to-date) then go to this website www.filehippo.com then download Internet Explorer 7 or Mozilla FIrefox 3.0 Beta 2, these are very effective browsers that contains pop-up blockers.

Trust me!!! you don't want yourself to be left behind, are you??
