Dryer overheating on timed dry/no heat settings

Replace the thermostat. A very inexpensive thermocouple that is not sensing the heat anymore and caused the element to overheat. In the UK the part will cost less than five pounds!
If the element had touched the ground, your safety earth leakage breaker in the fuse box would have tripped.

Blowing out cold air

That could be your heating element OR one of the components installed for safety reason's All dryers have limits which trip if their is an overheating problem. Overheating is cause mostly bu air flow blockage. Rarely by the heat control itself. But you cannot rule that out if the dryer is clear of lint and junk. My dryer Kenmore DWJR ELE 2406028 FM64 stopped working. First it would stop at intervals. Now if I let the dryer cool, I can get it to run for a few minutes. It is over 10 years old.

Sounds like it is overheating. Clean your dryer vents and remember it is attached to GAS lines so don't pull on the cabinet. You can usually pop some hidden clips on the Dryer panels to remove them and access the inner workings of the machine.

Servall is a company which carries the dryer parts and may be helpful to you. They have a Website and sometimes have Diagrams you can use. You can also try the Kenmore Website for the photos.

If the dryer vents are clean, it sounds like a thermal switch is overheating and shutting the unit down.

Identification of Dryer Problems

Signs that an electric dryer may need some repairs include the dryer not heating, clothing not drying fast enough, overheating of the dryer, the door not locking shut and the dryer not starting at all. Any of these are signs of an underlying problem that can usually be solved without the help of a repairman.
Effects of Dryer Issues

If an electric dryer doesn't heat properly, it prevents the clothing from becoming dry in most cases. Restricted venting can cause clothing not to dry fast enough, as the dryer will cycle the heating. Overheating dryers can ruin clothing or cause burns. If the door on a dryer wont close, it is impossible to get any laundry dried. A dryer not running at all can be very frustrating and lead to owners needing to use a laundromat.
Considerations for Solving Common Problems. If the dryer wont heat up, owners should check the circuit breaker to see if it's down. The voltmeter at the wall plug should read 240 volts. Checking the power cord can show owners if the wires are burned where they meet the dryer.Clothing not drying fast enough and overheating are signs of restricted venting. Removing the vent hose from the dryer can help owners decide if this is the cause of clothing not drying. If the hose is removed and the dryer runs normally, the vent should be cleaned.White plastic or thin foil ducts can also lead to overheating. Only metal ducts should be used with dryers. Kinks in the vent hose can also lead to heating issues. Overheating can also be caused by a shorted heater coil, a bad operating thermostat or worn drum seals. If the door on an electric dryer will not close, it is usually a problem with the door catch. This can be solved easily by purchasing a replacement door catch for the dryer.
When a dryer wont run, it could be a number of issues. The circuit breaker may be down or the wires at the plug may be burned. It may be an issue with the door switch. The door switch should click when closed. The thermal fuse should be checked for any issues.
Preventing Dryer Problems
The electric heating element, thermostats, fuses and thermal cut-off should be checked regularly for continuity. Dryer vents should not exceed 18 feet without a helper blower in the duct. Vents that are run vertically need to be cleaned out once a year. A meter can be purchased and used to diagnose problems with your electric dryer.
Warnings and Tips.Inexperienced people should never try to fix electrical problems at home. A professional should always be used if dryer owners suspect a more serious problem. Dryer owners can purchase kits to make cleaning dryer vents easier.
