I have started to notice a white filmy residue getting left behind on dishes after dishwasher runs entire cycle

If your dishes or glassware appear with a white film or a white powdery residue or spotted following a complete wash cycle, adjusting the amount or type of detergent you?re using and adjusting your hot water heater?s water temperature may solve the problem. But before you do either of these, put a rinse additive (such as Jet-Dry) in the rinse dispenser to improve the sheeting action of the water.

Next, you?ll have to determine whether the film is removable or permanently etched. To do this, soak a glass in undiluted white vinegar for about 15 minutes. Or, wash the glass with warm water and concentrated dishwasher detergent or a high-phosphate detergent (such as Glass Magic).

If the film comes off, it is probably caused by hard water minerals, improper amounts of detergent, or unsuitable water temperature.

Permanent etching is often caused by a combination of soft water and excessive heat or detergent. If glassware is permanently etched, there isn?t anything you can do to make it clear again. But you can avoid future etching by taking these steps:

1) Be sure hot water entering the dishwasher is no hotter than 140 degrees F. Don?t use extra-hot settings such as ?Power Scrub,? and use the ?Energy Saver? dry cycle.

2) Adjust the detergent amount.

3) Don?t pre-rinse your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher. Food particles on the dishes actually help the detergent and drying agents clean better.

A common cause of poor washing results is improper loading?dishes that block or impede the spray arm(s) or prevent the soap dispenser from opening. On the other hand, if your dishwasher has chronic problems with good washing, the problem may not be your dishwasher. A good first step is vary the amount of dishwasher detergent you're using and try switching brands.

Other possibilities: Your home?s water pressure may be too low, your water may be too hard, or the water temperature may not be hot enough.

In order for your dishwasher to fill to the appropriate level, water pressure should be from 20?120 pounds per square inch. If you suspect that your water pressure may be low, turn off all faucets or other users of water (such as washing machines and sprinklers) and then put a half-gallon jug under the kitchen faucet. Turn on the hot water full-blast. If the jug doesn?t fill within 14 seconds, your water pressure may be too low for proper dishwasher operation. Call your city water utility to discuss your options, or avoid drawing water elsewhere in the house or yard during dishwasher cycles.

The right amount of detergent to use depends on how large your load of dishes is and how hard your water is. Hardness is measured in grains of minerals?the more grains per gallon you have, the more detergent you?ll need. If your water has 12 grains or more of hardness, fill both dishwasher soap cups completely with detergent. If that doesn?t work, consider installing a water softener. To check water temperature, hold a meat thermometer under the hot water faucet for two minutes; if it doesn?t register a minimum of 140 degrees F., turn up the temperature dial on your hot water heater. (However, if you have a newer dishwasher that heats the water internally, it isn?t necessary to turn up your hot water heater.)

If your dishwasher has worked fine in the past but suddenly your dishes aren?t clean after the dishwasher completes all cycles, listen to the spray arm(s) spinning inside during the wash cycle. If spinning poorly, wait for the machine to cool down, remove the spray arm(s) by unscrewing the hubcap(s), lifting the arm(s) off, and then cleaning out the spray holes in the spray arm(s) with a stiff piece of wire.

There are 3 standard answers to solving the white-deposits-on -dishes problem: 1) Use a rinse aid; 2) use less detergent; 3) use vinegar in the washer. If you have hard water, none of these may work, especially if you've had the problem for a while. Because phosphates were ordered removed from dishwasher detergents, hard water minerals can now react with the soap to create a heavy greasy-feeling scum. That scum can build up in the water lines, arms, bottom reservoir, and filter, providing an endless supply of goo to spray on your dishes. This can be fixed. You need to remove and clean out the spray arms, the filters, and especially the array of parts at the bottom of the tub. I've seen up to 1 cup of coagulated/crystallized scum in the bottom of dishwasher tubs. Once you clean out the scum, then run the washer empty with a completely full detergent cup on the highest temperature setting, extra rinse. Before you start it add to the detergent cup 1 teaspoon of TSP(tri-sodium phosphate), a very powerful phosphate cleaner available at hardware stores. Your washer will now have all scum gone from the inner workings. From now on you must always fill both your detergent and pre-wash cups to the max and use a high temperature water setting, extra rinse. Chemically what you're trying to do is adding so much detergent that the scum-forming reaction is overwhelmed by the dispersant action of the detergent, and the extra heat helps this to be more effective. I am not a fan of vinegar in the wash cycle. Why? In some washers the vinegar fumes can reach the exposed contacts of the printed circuit board or touch pad, corrode them, and then your washer won't work at all, along with being very expensive to fix.

White powdery film is on dishes at end of cycle.


Too much detergent. the amount of detergent should vary with the amound of soil left on the dishes. Most users will pre wash their dishes in the sink, but still use the full recommended amount of detergent. There is no soil for the detergent to bind with, so it builds up in the pipework of your dishwasher. when the water evaporates during the drying cycle, the detergent residue is left behind on your dishes. Run a cycle or two with your dishwasher empty. add a cup of white vinegar to each cycle, but dont add any more detergent. After that, cut your detergent amount by half, and see if your issues go away. if not, please post the model and manufacturer of your dishwasher.

Lots of stuff left on dishes and glasses real filmy


run unit through a clean cycle. turn on hot water at sink til it gets hot then shut off . then tuen ion dishwasher when it starts washing open door and add 2 cups of white distilled vinegar and let it go through a cycle ( no dishes) when done. turn on hot water at sink before you use dish. also fill both soap cups and use rinse aid or jet dry. you should see better improvements. hope this helps..

Hi there......bit of a nuisance eh!....i take it that for the last couple of months the dishwasher was running perfectly....problem could b...(a) are u sure that the program your using incorporates a drying cycle...(b)..if the drying cycle incorporsates a turbo fan this fan may be faulty....easy to check as you will hear it start up at end of wash cycle....(c) after checking previous items and finding all ok ..it would oint to a faulty programmer
