The gen head will need to be removed if it in on that side and the flywheel side should be done as well the seals can be purchased from any auto parts store with using the numbers off the seal some engines need to be split do to the seal needs to enter from the inside side if this is the case reseal the hole engine i suggest you get a small engine repair manual or the manual for your unit this will be a involved undertaking removing the gen head can be tedious and special tools will be required so no damage to it hope this helps

We have a Briggs & Stratton Elite Series 5500 watt 8200 starting watt generator, it locked up on us last winter & we can't find out why, what can we do

If the engine is locked, it could be any one of several things. Most are rather expensive, like: seized due to no oil; broken rod; bad valve, etc. An engine mechanic is going to have to troubleshoot it for you.

I have a Storm Responder generator that had it's engine cease after the last power outage. We had an oil leak fixed, but this didn't hold.

it sounds that the gasket was not put on properly and the engine leaked all the oil out of it causing it to lock up no lubrication.

Hi b_fesperman,

Here is Briggs&Stratton's webpage with the oil specs for their engines: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines/support/frequently-asked-questions/Engine%20Oil%20Recommendations/

Copy and paste the entire address into your browser and the information will open for you. Note that synthetic 5W30 can be used in all temps.

Hope this helps. If it does, please place a vote for me. Thanks,

I have a 5.5 Vertical Briggs and Stratton about 6 years old that is mounted on a woodsplitter. This year it started dieing under load. It's driving a brand new 2 stage 11 gallon pump because I thought that...

If the generator was used during these 6 years continuously on full or near full load, it may have loosed compression (and derated load).

If you can measure the pump current and compare with the rated of the generator it should be less than the half of the rated to run properly in continuous mode. If it is greater than 75% it may be more than the possible for this generator.

Nevertheless the new fine oil, the overheating or lowering of the oil level during operation may be the reason for stopping.

My propane generator engine has apark and gas

For a quick test.

Check engine oil.

Remove wire from low oil sensor and see if it starts every time.

If that works change oil and replace low oil sensor.

Hope this tip helps to solve your problem.
