Don't know the make and model of your refrigerator, since you did not supply it. But there is a heater and thermostat that is attached to the evap coil to defrost it. It is typically controlled by controller board mounted on the back side of the refrigerator. You could check to see if the heater and thermostat is electrically open with an ohm meter. It should be less than 30 ohms if both the heater and thermostat is cold. With some models, the defrost heater can be set to manual defrost to verify that the system is working properly. Sometimes there is a diagram taped underneath or on the back side of the refrig.

I have this Refrigerator, Whirlpool GS6SHAXMQ Side by Side and the chill side does not cool.No alarm and freezer side is fine.

Although the freezer size seems to be fine, it is probably the problem! All the cooling comes from the freezer side into the chill side. So first make sure that the fan is operating, so that cold air is blown into the fresh food side. Then check the ice build up on the evaporator coils (behind shield in the upper section of the freezer). If there is a lot of ice, maual defrost it by unplugging from power and using a hair dryer or heat gun - make sure you are ready to deal with all the water! The ice build up is caused by a failure of the defrost circuit which is made up of the defrost heater, defrost thermostat and a defrost timer that is part of the control board on your unit.
Hope this helps!

Good morning Richard. I own an Kenmore Model # 253-55693402 (side by side) built in 2004. Yesterday afternoon it stopped cooling (both sides). I emptied it and turned it off last night before going to...

Check to see if you hear the fans running whlie having the doors open and holding the light switch in.
If the unit is running and cooling but the fans are not, you may have a fan out. Post back your results to me.

Just replaced evaporator fan motor and plugged back in and coil getting cold and compressor working when should fan kick in

On some Kenmores it'shas a fancy term;it is called Pre-Chill. The compressor and compressor fan comes on but the inside fan does not till the evap chills down.

My side by side fridge has stopped chilling down, the power is Ok, and moter seems to be working, but no cold inside. A few months ago the freezer side stopped, but as i did not use it , i just left well...

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay. Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).

Frost in back of frost free freezer, ice maker not working, frig temp not cold enough

Whats happening is the defrost heater has failed. It is causing ice to build in the freezer and that is stopping ice production and fresh food chilling. Solution: Remove panel to evaporator and replace heater. Use hair dryer to melt ice. I have your repair manual: HERE

An air conditioning heating and ventilation expert named Dr Z normally makes HVAC videos but his neighbor's ice box did the same as yours and he had a chance to check it out and made this short film.He calls it his HVAC Refrigerator repair I thought it was pretty cool, cause it gives a good idea what is involved in this repair. Refrigerator will not chill after power outage, frost on freezer

Please check other question on this subject, but long story short is that the unit needs to be completly defrosted, your freezer is what cools your fridge and if there is ice build up on the evaporator air cannot flow through to the fridge.

My ge side by side will freeze up the coils in about seven days. service tech came out and replaced a heating coil inside of the unit and we are still expieriencing the same problem. the compressor pulls...

Since the heater has been replaced, you could have a bad thermodisk, but more likely a problem with the defrost timer. The tech should have checked the heater and disk rather than replacing the heater blindly.
You probably know some of this but for me it's a copy-n-paste.
All frost-free refrigerator-freezers with exception for the ones with solid-state control have a thing in the system called a Defrost Timer. The thing is a little clock of sorts that tracks accumulated running time. Every 8 hours of run time the thing cycles through a defrost cycle. The defrost cycle is necessitated by the humidity that forms ice crystals on the freezing coils, if the frost is not eradicated it can build up to the point where no air flows over the coils to chill the inside of the box. (it may keep the freezer cold but no air goes to the fridge part. If completely solid neither cools) Most timers are located on the front of the machine, behind that removable grille under the door. Sometimes it's found in the refrigerator behind a plastic cover. The timer has a round hollow shaft through it, and can be turned with a screwdriver. If the compressor is running, give the shaft a slow twist until a click is heard. The compressor will stop. Give the fridge an hour to defrost the coils, and check it to see if it took off running. If an hour has passed and the fridge hasn't restarted, advance the timer again to start. Sometimes the nudge will make the timer run for a while. If this is the case, the unit will chill, and buy you some time to get it fixed. If the timer does not run, you can repeat the process daily until you get a replacement timer.

Hope this is helpful for you.

Ice maker & water dispenser won't work

I recently found out that the water supply lines are coiled up inside behind the frige on the refrigerator side moving the unit will cause those coiled up lines to shift to the freezer side of the unit, causing a freeze up,take the cardboard lower back off and move those lines further away from the freezer side of the unit, as one of those coiled up lines are to chill the water for the dispenser and the other is supply for the icemaker, this should fix your problem, becareful not to move them too far away from the freezer side as they are meant to chill the water for the dispenser

Refrigerator not cooling but freezer is

Something has stopped the cold air being ducted from freezer side to refrigerator side of things. Possibly duct blocked due to ice build up, evaporator not self defrosting etc. Turn unit off for a few days till it melts and then turn back on. If it was because a door has been left slightly open you will be ok. If for any other reason you will want to have it serviced in the next week or so.

Samsung side by side srs580dw stops freezing and chilling

Since the temps on the display don't show correctly I'd assume something is wrong with that. If the temps are sending info out that the unit is OK and at proper temp (when it's not) then the compressor won't turn on because it thinks the fridge is cold enough. Soooo... I'd suspect that control board. It's item 48 on this diagram http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/Maytag/SS10-2.gif
