Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Our Coleman Central heat and air unit EB20B keeps blowing the inline 3 amp fuse. How should I troubleshoot the fan relay and blower motor to look for defects that would draw too many amps. The relay and blower motor are 11 years old. Thanks Ken Rohm

Thank you for your quick response. Do you have any suggestions as to where the short could be? We traced and repaired the yellow wire to the Contactor. Could it be in the wall somewhere? Dumb question I know but we've been replacing brittle wiring for two weeks now and the fuse still blows. Any suggestions where to look?
    Thanks

Thanks. It has to be in the yellow or y wire at the thermostat. You answered very quickly and to the point.

The transformer is blowing the fuse because somewhere down the line two thermostat wires are shorted together. You gotta trace that out till you find the shorted wiring first. It is unlikely a component would blow that fuse. Most of the time it is wires chewed up or dry rotted and touching.

Get a new run of wire and tie it to the old one and ease a new strand out there

The fan stopped working for the rear AC/heat in our 2003 odyssey. Checked 40amp suqare fuse under hood and it tested ok. Is there a fuse or breaker for the rear fan motor?

The large fuse you checked is for the rear fan blower motor. The fuse you need to check is for the fan motor relays and rear mode control motor. It is fuse No. 3 (7.5A) located in the driver's under dash kick panel fuse box.

If fuse No. 3 is blown and you replace the fuse and it blows immediately, you'll have to check the five relays and the mode control motor all located near the rear A/C unit in the right aft sidewall. Most likely, the mode control doors have become jammed and that is why the fuse blows. The doors shift air from overhead vents (cool) to floor vents (heat).

If the fuse is fine, the trouble is probably with the blower motor itself or the wiring to the blower motor is broken, or there is a bad ground.

C-19 Blower motor fuse 25A located in cabin fuse box. Left hand footwell on LHD vehicles, right hand dashboard on RHD vehicles.
Start by checking blower relay B-36 in the engine compartment fuse and relay box. Remove the relay. Jumper directly from battery to pins 85 and 86. (also see here: http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5544622-wire_relay if you dont know about relays) The relay should click Now measure across pins 30 and 87. Measurement should be 0 ohm.
Remove the blower motor(3 screws on the bottom of the unit under the passenger side dash) and connect jumper leads from the battery directly to the blower motor to see that it operates.
The blower motor resister is mounted on the ducting between the motor housing and the heating unit. Remove to test
Measure :
  • pin 1-2 : 2.4 ohm
  • pin 2-4 : 0.9 ohm
  • pin 2-6 : 0.28 ohm
  • pin 2-3 : 0 ohm

you say it keeps blowing the transformer? you mean circuit breaker? if it is the circuit breaker, have the wiring checked for a short, if no short do a ohm test on the compressor. it may have shorted out internaly.

Air and heat not blowing air through vents

Either Your fan switch is burned out or you blower motor is no good, your blower motor is on the passenger side under the dash. Before you replace any parts you need to check your fuses and relays under your hood and in the car. Usually if your fan switch goes bad you will still get some air blowing thru the vents, so my guess would be blower motor, If its not a blown fuse or relay.

Fan keep,s blowing

Your thermostat is calling for blower, your fan relay is stuck, or that model had a time delay blower solid state board on it which had the blower relay on it, and it could be bad. I would turn the power off to all of your system for a few minutes and see if this could make something happen.
