Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Verbatim USB320 portable hard drive. It will boot up and be recognized by my computer through a USB 2.0 port. A couple of minutes into use, it will intermittently "lose" the connection and it usually automatically reconnects, but it sometimes will not and will drop the connection altogether. At any rate, even if it reconnects, it will freeze and hang up any application I may have been utilizing from it's storage. Any suggestions?

It will occasionally make a grating noise during startup and if it does, it will not be recognized by the computer. If it is recognized, it has not made the noise. I am concerned the drive might be bad.

Try it in a different USB port, if able. Is the drive making any abnormal noise or does it feel hot?

It does appear the drive is failing. One trick in backing up the data from it is by changing the drives orientation. If it sits upright, lay it down. If it sits horizontal, flip it over. It may give you enough time and stability with the drive to get the data backed up from it.

Actually, I think I just figured out a work around. It only happens if I have multiple USB devices going at the same time. If the external hard drive is the only USB device occuping a port, it seems to work fine. Not the best situation but one that I can live with for now.

The usual problem is the Drive enclosure. Take the drive out of the enclosure and fit into a new one. They are cheap and this will tell you if the drive has failed or not.

It want come up on my computer

Step 1:
Problems with Verbatim portable hard drives vary depending on your model of hard drive, your operating system and your computer hardware. Some problems can include insufficient USB power output, the file system format, and potential overheating due to enclosure materials.

File System b> Verbatim portable hard drives come formatted for use with Mac computers. If you're using it with a Windows or Linux computer, you will need to format it to a file system that your operating system will recognize; Windows computers typically work with NTFS, while modern Linux distributions use ext4. If you have computers with mutliple operating systems, FAT32 is usually considered easier for all operating systems to recognize. Verbatim does not recommend switching a portable drive between PC and Mac computers once you've formatted the drive one way or the other. Adequate Power While most computers supply adequate power with one USB port, older computers can have insufficient power output. If your computer doesn't seem to be powering the drive, use of a Y-shaped USB cable, designed to be plugged into two USB ports, can get more power to run the drive. Additionally, consider trying different USB ports on the same computer; some USB ports get more power than others. Drivers b> Make sure that you have any relevant drivers related to the hard drive that you have purchased. If your drive didn't come with a setup disc, you can check the Verbatim website for product drivers. Overheating b> Of Verbatim's seven portable hard drives, four are enclosed in plastic; of the other three, one is enclosed in aluminum, one in leather, and one in rubber. While all the drives are tested to run well with their enclosure, metal enclosures conduct heat away from the hard drive and help to prevent overheating. Plastic, on the other hand, is an insulator, so plastic enclosures may contribute to heat buildup. Check plastic-enclosed drives for overheating and avoid leaving them plugged in when not in use.

How do I use your Verbatim? Please give me instructions

From Verbatim "Installing your portable hard drive is extremely simple - just use the included mini-USB cable to connect your hard drive to any free USB port on your computer. On Windows computers, a new icon will appear in My Computer representing your hard drive. On Mac OS systems, your hard drive will appear on the desktop as a new disk."

Make sure that you are connected to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. Also try a different port on your computer. It is unlikely that two hard drives would be bad, but I would try them on another computer. Thanks for using fixya

I have an external hard drive back up, Verbatim, Model USB320 and my computer does not recognize it being attached.

Hello

A few questions that may confirm problem.
Does your computer seem to know that something is plugged in?
Or does it say that it does not recognize the device?

Well, if the computer actually knows that a device has been plugged in, but you just cannot see the device in my computer, here is how you fix that. Just follow these steps:
Control panel
Administrative tools
Computer management
Storage
Disc management

Now you should see your device presented in the schematic below.
Right click on the device and assign a new drive letter.

If your computer states that it does not recognize the device, try plugging it in one of the back USB ports of the computer. Please rate this.

Best regards

My verbatim usb external hard drive quit working on only one of my computers. I tried using computer management but it doesn't recognize it there. it does show up as Toshiba in the device manager but...

The brand of your HD is Verbatim, so it should not show up as Toshiba in the Device Manager. Your computer is detecting another device.

Please do not rely on the Device Manager, you have to check the Disk Management instead. If the HD did not show up in the Disk Management, try connecting the HD into another USB ports of the problem computer. It could only be the USB ports of the problem computer is bad.

How many computers do you have? If you have 3 PCs and only one computer is having a problem, then you might need to update the USB driver of the problem computer.

Have a great day!

This external drive isn't recognized by any of my computers. HELP

If it is not showing up on any computers there's most likely a hardware problem in the drive or AC adapter. Do the lights come on when you plug the power in? If not you need a new adapter, if they do the failure is either in the drive caddy circuitry or in the drive circuitry. You can take it to your local PC shop and have the techs test the HDD in a new caddy, if it works in the new caddy your done, if it doesn't you may need the help of a pro to recover your files off of the drive. Hope this helps FixYa, if you need additional assistance or a referal to a pro comment back here with questions or your country and city. Chris
