Cannon multipass 390 print problems

  1. I have the same problem. I have cleaned the print heads. Replaced the ink cartridge. Checked for tape on my ink tank. Cleaned the roller. Made certain the ink tanks were in the correct place and locked in. And still nothing prints. All systems sound and look fine.
  2. I checked the nozzle pattern; I get some light colors but no black ink printed on the page. I changed my document to color but still nothing prints. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem, cleaned heads, replaced cartridge, nothing prints, no ink at all no colors or black.

Is there a way to fix a print head on the cannon 390 without having to purchase a new one?


Before you throw it out and get a new one, try these things:
-run several head cleanings and print the nozzle check pattern
-if that doesn't fix it, remove the cartridge(s) from the blocked head and drop alcohol where the ink enters the printer.
-reinsert the cartridges and run some head cleanings.
-dip the print heads in Isopropyl Alcohol overnight, which you can buy from chemist

Tried solution to change to USB Cable. Replaced alll ink cartridges. Photos still wont print. Coming out grainy and with white lines all overthe picture no matter what source I print from.

This mostly occurs due to some paper quality.

* Try replacing some different Quality of papers
* Try cleaning the Heads of the printer through the maintainece software provided by canon.

Your print head may be damaged. You might consider replacing it.

Canon suggests pulling the ink wells and also pulling the print head and then reinstalling the whole assembly. They consider this a reset. It is also suggested to replace the printhead which the ink cartridges are housed in. I have done this to remedy bad printing and am considering this $50 purchase as I am dealing with "wrong cartridge" message also. Some have said replacing the printhead remedied this code problem. BUT, i did read one person who said this did NOT work. Right now I am debating whether I should put $50 dollars more into this machine....although this printer has been excellent and many agree.
Comments: Apr 17, 2010 - As a follow up I did fix my "Wrong Cartridge" message by replacing the printhead, I worked and worked at cleaning the old one but finally gave in and anted up the $50. This fixed it! Long live DIYers!

It doesn't print in black but prints in color


Hi, To ensure this is only an issue with the black, I recommend printing off a nozzle check. This will show you if this problem is effecting any of the other colours.
To print a nozzle please refer to chapter 12 page 115 of the manual,
If colours are missing I recommend cleaning the print head. You have two options for cleaning the print head a normal clean and a deep clean, start by doing a normal clean if required try doing a deep clean.

Alarm flashes ink emptyhas ink! color was printing only yellow/green now prints only red/pink!


any chance it has dried out? run the test / head cleaning / did you reset the cartridge when you replaced it? generally if one or two colors work - the problem is the ink cartridge or the head for the colors not working. Did you remove the "tape" on the new cartridge?

New cartridge won't print


  1. Make sure you removed the tape from the ink cartridge.
  2. Press the <Menu> button on the printers operation panel.

  3. Press the left [<] or right [>] arrow buttons to select [MAINTENANCE].

  4. Press the <Set> button.

  5. Press [<] or [>] to select the cleaning setting you want. Select [HEAD CLEANING] for normal print head cleaning. Select [HEAD REFRESHING] for deep print head cleaning.

    Note: [HEAD REFRESHING] uses more ink than [HEAD CLEANING], so perform [HEAD REFRESHING] only when necessary.

  6. Press <Set>.

  7. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern and perform at least two Head Refreshing if the pattern is not correct.

Print quality is poor


if you replace the black ink cart with an original one then it's the print head
Solution: Cleaning the Print Head - C555 / C560 / C635 / C530 / C545

Untitled Document Follow this procedure to clean the BJ cartridge print head:
1. Press c755funckey.gif 2. Press c755cleankey.gif 3. Use c755down.gif or c755up.gif to select the [HEAD CLEANING]..
4. Press c755set.gif.
The MultiPASS cleans the print head.

Black will print properly only on "High" Print setting


After all the trouble shooting you have done their most likely a hardware issues causing the problem.
