I've taken a number of photos yet when I try and retrieve them from the memory sticks they are not available...are they stored elsewhere on the camera or have I been wasting my time?

You can retrieve those photos & if you want to maximize chances of memory card files recovery, the first thing you should do is immediately stop taking more photos or videos (with your current camera memory card) in case partial files are overwritten.

Then connect the camera (memory card) to a PC or Mac which has install a data recovery tool, check this site Digital Camera Data Recovery for a list of good and tested recovery software.

Remove your memory stick and try to see if the files are available when it is transferred to the PC'/laptops card reader. If the files are recognisable then you will be able to retrieve them. So check this out. Good day

It sounds like you are using a different level of operating system and the preview feature is not available, or the windows media version is out of date. Also check to see if your version supports the file extension!

It may be possible to recover deleted pictures by using the Memory Stick File Rescue application.This software will work with a Sony Memory Stick only.

Yes, but you will need to purchase a "Rescue" program such as Rescue - Pro, this enables you to search a camera memory card, and retrieve the last images taken.  Beware however that if your son has taken more photos after the ones he deleted then the "Rescue" software may have trouble. 
The best option is to withdraw the camera card from use until you have used the "Rescue" software, to prevent corruption to the image files. These programs are available for down load off the web, at very reasonable prices, or maybe available when purchased with a high end memory card, such as San Disk Extreme IV Series Cards.

How about reformat the memory stick. all stored files and folders will be destroyed after you format it. Eventhought you have taken all of the photos, you may have accidently recorded a video which has taken all of the memory space.

If it did not help, try a different compatable memory stick. If you got the same problem reinitialize your camera to the defaults.

The photos should be recoverable with undelete software.

1) Step 1 - Don't save any more photos on that card.
2) Obtain undelete software
3) I have successfully used recuva.exe to undelete photos from a memory card. This program should be available online. I think it is freeware.
4) Install this program on to your computer and/or on to a spare memory stick.
5) Start the Recuva program and plug the memory card into your PC (or plug in the camera to your PC using a USB cable. Your computer will recognize the card in your camera as an external drive.

If you have taken no more photos you should be able to recover all the deleted files from your memory card.

I would try switching the sim card into another phone. this may provide the transfer bridge you need.

Yeah, if you format the memory card, you will lose all data on it. try to scan memory card with updated anti virus software and always use memory card by camera to PC.
