Question about LG Televison & Video

1 Answer

LG42 5010 LCD TV developed a fault where right hand half of screen is dark with blurred colours for about 5 mins then corrects itself. Local engineer says it is the display but it is only 21 months old. Got TV back from them and after fault goes away display looks fine aort from occasional jitter every 10 secs or so. Could it be a fault other than the display? Brian Kerr

Thanks taran_2005 for you comments which are at least hopeful. When the set is first switched on the right hand side is dark with blurry colours and a long persistance of the previous image. Then after about 5 minutes the screen instantly changes at the RHS to a perfect image even on full HD. Since the TV was taken in for an estimate and its return I now notice a jitter every 10secs or so but on the whole the picture is perfect. The repair compnay said it was the display and would cost £400 to replace and os is not a viable repair. Brian

taran_2005, why would the display operate almost normally after 5 mins if it is faulty. Are the T con boards expensive?

Hi,

There could be 2 reasons for the same i.e Bad LCD panel ( which is quite common ) or T Con board for the same. It would be tough to distinguish between the two without looking at the TV.However, i could provide you with an idea that most of us would take into consideration.

If you look at the TV, if the image is not perfectly linear, then most probably it is T Con board. However, If the bad side slowly blends into the good side, it is probably bad LCD Panel.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

I have not checked the price for T conn board for this model. However, for most of the TV's - it is anywhere between $75 - $100. If you call any tech to replace it , including the labor cost - it would be around $200 - $250.

My thumb rule is - If the cost of the repair is more than half the price of the original value - time for the new one. So, does it wise to spend $250 for repair for a TV worth $450???

Again - Cost of repair depends on many factors like location, technician, whether it is a small shop or big repair center and so on.

You could get a used TV ( same model ) for around $200. That's a different story, if you purchase a non working TV ( same model ) from craiglist for $25 or so and the pull out T conn board and swap to see if that works. Other than this, either way you would be at loss. It is better to bite the bullet and buy a new one. ( again that's my personal opinion ).

Any fault in T conn board would cause TV screen to cause such effects. I have seen even more funny things that could happen. Few models have T conn board as a part of LCD display. I have no idea regarding this LG Model. If that's the case, the complete LCD assembly has to be changed.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Very blurry picture / vertical colour lines

It sounds that the LVDS cable; the cable that connects to T'Con board to LCD panel is loosely fitted. Check it first. If it is found OK, the panel itself should be suspected. If you wish to get more details, http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Pull up older posts there, either by its left side bar, or see it in Timslide option. Faulty screenshots of LCD TV screens, have been illustrated. Compare them to your TVs present screen view, and be sure. Check the site with patience.

As you suspect, it might be of T'Con board fault. Check all the flat cables connected to T'Con to panel should be checked first for any loose contacts. Re-seat them once. SCREEN BLACK ON ONE SIDE

Sorry long delay on seeing this - I forgot I had a Fixya account! Unfortunately this is the symptom of a dead or dying Inverter - LCD screens have two sets of Inverters - left and right. Both are high voltage (i.e. usually far higher than the input voltage) and are used to turn on the back-lighting in LCD displays. the lights themselves are much light Fluorescant tubes - which is why a White screen is so White. What you are experiencing is that the Right side inverter is pretty much end of life - it could be a general fault with the unit in manufacture or just a fault that has developed. It could also be the mainboard itself not supplying the correct signal to the inverter circuitry to turn it on. It could indeed also be the backlight itself.

Vizio lcd flatpanel tv with dark background

If half screen is affected it will be either a board (LCD and Plasma have different names) but in those one board drives each side of the screen unit--worst case is the display panel itself which is fatal from a cost point of view.

I am having a similar problem. Try reseating the ribbon cables being very careful with the clips that hold them. On the T-Con board. Sounds like either the Lcd panel screen itself or the t-con board.

NOT really a solution; I deduced there is an overheating problem likely with a faulty component, so I looked at Thompson Directory and found local repair engineer who has the TV now.
I really wondered if this was a known common problem.
Thanks for you interest.
