You need to check your impeller and your axle bearings. To check the pool cleaners impeller, make sure that the transformer is unplugged to prevent electrical shock. Take the top grill off by removing the 2 screws from the top. Remove any debris that you find and replace the grill. Secondly, check all of the axles and the wheels for debris, hair, or lint that would restrict movement. Make sure that you do not force the wheels. If you aren't able to fix it with these solutions, it could be your gear box or another electronic section of the cleaner. You will need to have it services professionally.

I would first check for obstructions in the front and back wheel axles. Then, take the top grill off and make sure that the impeller is not jammed. It sounds more likely to me that you are having a problem with the pool cleaners gear box or drive system. If it is still under warranty, send it back to the manufacturer. If its not, you will need to have it repaired by an experienced pool repair person.

Robo-kleen just moves back and forth in about a 2 foot section - why?

There could be several problems with this pool cleaner that cause it to move back and forth. First, check the impeller to make sure that its not jammed. Take the top grill off by removing the 2 screws from the top. Remove the debris. Replace the top grill and tighten the 2 screws. Next, check your front and rear wheels for any obstruction that could cause lack of movement. You might also need to remove the limit screw from the wheels for greater movement abilities.

It sounds like your gear box has gone out. If that is the case, the pool cleaners not going to work until you replace the gear box. Unfortunately, this is something that only a professional can do. Just to make sure that this is the problem, you should first check the wheels for any debris or damage. Then make sure that you don't have any clogs or jammed/cracked hoses.

There are several things to check for with these pool cleaners. First, make sure that there are not kinks or knots in the cable that would restrict movement. Make sure that there is not hair, fabric, or other debris in the impeller. This can also cause the back and forth movement. Check for debris or leaves caught in the axle bearings.
