Air conditioning worked all summer and now heat will not come on and outside unit will not run

Is this a heat pump or straight cool with heat strips. If straight cool the outdoor unit should not run in heat. If heat pump, did it work last year? If it did and now the outdoor unit will not run you likely have a bad control board. Possibly lost your settings in your tstat... check the stat first, make sure its configured for HP

When em heat is on my outside unit runs but when not on em heat it doesn't. Which setting is best to use?

Has this always been this way? When the emergency heat is on the outside unit shouldn't run. When in normal heat, no emergency heat, the outside unit should be running unless the temperature is below the balance point ( usually around 35 degrees). If this has always been this way and the outside temperature is above 40 degrees you might have your 1st stage and 2nd stage wires switched.

Icing up outside. no heat inside

Isolate unit to defrost out door unit,
Once defrosted run unit ensuring heat from unit inside and fans are running outside,
if fans and compressor are running and there is next to no heat inside coming from indoor unit this is a common sign of a refrigerant shortage in system and this may cause outdoor unit to freeze up

Carrier 38CKC042300. oUTSIDE UNIT FAN WAS TURNING REAL SLOW. ac UNIT IS OFF BUT FAN TO OUTSIDE UNIT IS STILL TURNING. sHOULD NOT BE TURNING AT ALL WITH AC UNIT OFF

The outside fan may run if the unit is in defrost mode this is normal for most heat pumps it is there way of trying to keep the outside unit from staying iced over so the next time the unit runs it will have air flow through the coil and the ice will not be there to prevent air flow.

Goodman package- no heat below 30 degrees outside

I believe the unit you are describing is a heat pump. Heat pump are great when the temperature isn't below 30 With low ambient temps. outside it is much more efficient and comfortable to run aux. electric heat from the heat pump.

Running high head pressure in heating cycle runs fine in a/c cycle

Check your indoor air filter. When the unit is in heat pump mode the indoor unit is cooling the air, ie. removing the heat from the unit. If the air flow is restricted then the unit will run high head pressure. If the filter is clean then maybe something else is restricting the air flow of the indoor unit. The other possiblity is that the unit is over charged. When in cooling the overcharge will not create the problems that it will in heating mode. The only proper way to charge a heatpump is to remove ALL the refrigerant and then wiegh in the proper amount of refrigerant into the system.

Furnace runs on heat, air conditioner does not

If you have a Gas furnace in the Attic then the answer is yes. The outside condenser will not run if in fact you have a gas furnace.

Friedrich YM18J34 will not heat

Sounds like a bad limit switch. Open and test continuity on all limits with power off and at least one wire off one side of each
