Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Codes PO171 and PO174 in your Mercury sable means a bad Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor as a bad sensor will cause the vehicle not to start. Also these codes indicate a lean fuel mixture. Check for vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold and any vacuum lines. If you do not find any intake leaks, replace the mass air flow sensor. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

2001 Mercury Sable: code for System Lean to Bank 2= Car Idles too high. Possible causes?

sounds like a air leak ,, bank 2 sensor 2 ?? refers to after the catalytic converter ... could be a faulty sensor but more likely an air leak .... even a faulty fuel tank cap seal is enough to cause problems on these systems

The code is for the upstream O2 sensor bank one stuck on lean.
Could be a faulty sensor, or low fuel pressure, or a vac leak.

I have got a P0171 & P0174 engine codes on my 2001 mercury sable. What do I do to fix it.

P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1
P0172 System Too Rich Bank 1
P0173 Fuel Trim Bank 2
P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2

OK, that's a partial list of codes, the fuel delivery is controlled by the oxygen sensors, so it's possible that something in that area could be causing your problem.

However, it could also be clogged fuel injectors that can't deliver enough fuel to the cylinders compared to the air that is pulled into the engine.

Try some fuel injector cleaner for that poured into the gas tank.

How does it run?
Does it miss at all?

Check Engine Light Problem

Codes that tell you your engine is running lean can be caused by a number of things. First thing to do (and cheapest) is to get some fuel injector cleaner and run it for awhile. Dirty injectors can cause these codes. I recommend lucas brand myself but there are several different cleaners to choose from. The second thing is checking your vacuum lines. If there is a leak it can cause the engine to **** in too much air and cause the codes. Anything beyond that gets into alot of mechanical work and should be done by a certified technician
