Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I've just moved into a home with an existing Armstrong Concept 10 A/C unit that's at least 15 years old. When I left for a 2-week vacation, the unit was working great. I set the thermostat to 77 to save energy. Upon returning, I lowered the thermostat to 70 and waited, and waited and waited several hours only to find the temp. in the house was not lowering, it was actually rising! I could see the unit's fan blade was not moving so I checked the circuit box in the basement, and the A/C breaker HAD BEEN TRIPPED! I reset the circuit breaker and even turned the unit on/off from the thermostat. The fan was moving now, but the temperature was still NOT LOWERING! I went to bed hoping the problem would be resolved in the morning, but I was not. Again, the unit is running, blade moving, fan blowing, but no 70 degree air, the air is probably the 77-79 degree air the thermostat is displaying as the indoor temp. 1. What may have caused the circuit to trip? 2. What can I check outside on the unit itself to get it cooling again? 3. What damage, if any, may have occurred to the unit if it ran non-stop for 2 weeks? Thank you!

Hello 93 The compressor caused the breaker to trip.A weak capasitor or burnt wire is a common cause. It sounds like the compressor is NOT on even though the fan is.It may need a new wire or maybe a HARD START kit to help restore operation.Call for help.HS kits are not expensive.NO damage results from leaving it on, the problem would have happened anyway even if you went on vacation or not.The curcit breaker stopped it.Its worth fixing.

I have an armstrong air concept 1000 ac unit that is making a slight rattling sound. The unit itself works great, but the sound has me concerned. What could it be?

usually the fan touching the casing. They move on the spindle sometimes. It can also just be a vibration to a metal part.

Where can I find the specs for an earlier Goodman heat pump?

You say 2 to 3 years... I'm assuming the unit is older than that. Especially being r22. What about the first 10 years??? Normally you will get 400 to 500 sqft per ton of cooling, but, that depends on heat load calculations. If the unit wasn't big enough you would have had this issue 10 years ago, not when the system kept running low on refrigerant. At first guess I would say a 2 ton unit is not big enough but if it worked fine for 10 years...wuth all that in mind, if it were me, (a seasoned professional) I would spend 1800 to fix my 15 year old r22 unit before I spent $4000 on a new r410a piece of junk. Best Wishes!!

I have an Armstrong Air Concept 1000 AC unit won't turn on

Neither of the above solutions are correct. You need to replace the capacitor 35/5 uhf 370 vac the cost should be $15 or less at a local HVAC retailer. Make sure you have the breakers off plus pull the contacts out which are inside the big box connected to your house. Make sure you pay attention to where the wires go. The red wire goes to common, the yellow to compressor (herm) brownish to the fan. The capacitor will be oval not round <!-- from fixya rte -->
