The belt in the main drive as worn out as youhave kept it off from use. In period of time these belts age off and gets softened. There is now difficulty to get these small belts in the market after the arrival of the CD's and ipods. So carefully open the back side -only if precision work can be done than to spoil the gift-- remove the back ccover, the board and the belt can be seen. take sample to buy and replace in the same arrangement.
Credit if info is useful.

there are little rubber belts inside that attach the motor to the gears that turn the tapes or cd's. over time they stretch out and turn everything slower and slower. you can try replacing the belts, or finding the speed adjustment screw for the motor and turning it up. either one is usually more effort than its worth though. they just weren't designed to last for a long time.

Speedproblem. My wm-d6 walkman goes way to fast! More than twice as fast normal speed 4,75cm/s. Is there anything I can do about it myself or is it a component failing? /Mats

Inside the unit, theres a capacitor or something on the circuit board that has a little phillips head screw area on it, that if you turn it either clockwise or counter clockwise, you can adjust the speed of the cassette playback. This is usually a silver metal thing sticking up somewhere inside kind of shaped like a letter "U'. the inside of the "U' is a round insert like I said with a phillips head screwdriver cut out. just turn that inner piece left or right while playing a cassette to your desired speed.

I have a sony walkman WM-3. It suddenly stopped playing. Do you do repairs ?

Please check for the belts if the battery you have installed is new and the set gives a hum on play. If not you will have to check the power switch, the mechanism switch and the line to the main board.
If the motor turns but not the capstan and the reel then change the belt, the rollers or the pulley. I hope this will get your set back to action. Good day

It wont play tapes

If the walkman comes on but just wont play tapes then more offten then not the belt has broken or clutch has worn out and will have to be replaced.
you will have to open the walkman up in order to do it, you can get a new belt from any electronics parts supply store (not radioshack) there usualy around $1 and are easy to put on.

The power is on but the motor will not turn the tape drive. Does anyone know a good repair shop?

Hmm, when you press play, can you feel the motor turning, do the spindles turn on fast forward or rewind? If so you may have one of two problems. First check to see if the cue button is is depressed. If it is jammed, the deck will FF and RR but won't play. If it's not that, but the motor still spins, the motor is no longer making contact with the flywheel. If you have a repair manual, dismantle the deck and check out the motor contact

Sony Walkman cassette tape player operating at slower speed

If this is the WMD6C then it is servo locked and can be fine tuned with the pitch control on the back of the unit just turn the switch to on then adjust to preferred speed.

Plays too fast

WMD6C has a pitch control on the back of the unit that can change the speed of the tape, so switch it off, but if that is not the problem then inside the unit it has a servo set speed pot on the main board.
