Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

My S5 stopped to work!

Hello everybody,

A friend of mine went to US and I bougth a S5 for me. Now, the camera is here with me in Brazil.
I "played" with it for a week. Everything worked fine (I shot 389 photos and made some videos with it), until the day that the rechargeable batteries ran out of charge.
The lens didn't retracted, and I started to be afraid.
So, I recharged the batteries. Tried to turn on, and after about 5 attempts (turning on, nothing. Pulling out the batteries, putting it again, turning on, nothing), it started to work again!
So, I connected it on my notebook's USB. The PC recognized it, and when I would start to copy the photos, the camera shut off.
I tried to turn it on, the green led lighted, but just turned off. I could smell something burnt on the battery case, but it can be something of my mind, because today I can't smell it anymore. Since this day, the S5 never worked again.

The things I already tried:

1 - Take the CR1220 off and the batteries, wait for a long time and try again
2 - Recharge the batteries
3 - Try non-rechargeable alcaline batteries (DURACELL)

Can anyone help me? I can't send it to the technical assistance, because it came from the US and I am here in Brazil.

Thanks MrsJGreen, but I already sent the camera (from Brazil) to the Canon Factory Service.
They fixed it with no charge.
They don't send it to Brazil, so I asked them to send it to a friend's house in Miami.
The camera already arrived there, I just need to go to US to pick it up! :)
Hehe, the problem is that I can't go there so soon. :(

This is a safety issue since you smelled something burnt. I realize that you are out of the country, but if you have anyone in the US who can take care of this for you, have them call Canon and the call will be escalated to customer relations. They take safety issues very seriously. I'm not sure what the outcome will be, but I would try to have someone in the US help me out with that.

A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Flash not working

Before you give up on the camera:

There are many setting that can affect whether the flash works or not.
You may have inadvertently set something that is stopping the flash from working.

Get out your User Manuals and use the index at the back of the book.
Look for something about "Resetting the camera".

This will reset the camera to factory specifications.
Then see if the flash works.

If that does not work ... recharge the battery and try again.

If that does not work, the flash is likely dead.

Canon S5 died.

If it was less than a year old, I hope you sent it to Canon for repair.

If not, then you have to have your camera professional serviced to repair it.

It may be an internal switch, the DC/DC converter board, or a defect in the main board.

Best regards,
