Hi Nancy,

I bet you've got all kinds of frost / ice behind the plastic cover that protects (and shields from view) the cooling coil in the freezer compartment.

You probably have one or more: defrost timer, defrost terminator or defrost heating element that has failed. Call for service - or empty the fridge and unplug with door open for a day - ice will melt and when you plug in again it will work just fine. Until frost builds up again that is.

Good luck!

Ice is melting in the ice container.

Step 1:

You could have one of several problems with this unit. Do you have heavy frost on the back wall of the freezer? If you do then you have a defrost problem. You might need to replace the defrost t-stat on the evaporator.

Step 2:

If that is not the problem then you might have a dirty condenser. Check the dividing wall between the refrigerator and freezer, is it hot? If so, clean your condenser and make sure the fan in the back is running.

Step 3:

If that is not the problem then you might have a water supply issue. Are the ice cubes hollow? It might be just a water filter that needs to be replaced. Your ice maker might be dripping water as well, if you see ice cycles hanging from the ice maker then the ice maker needs to be replaced.

Step 4:

The worst would be a freon leak... To check this remove the evaporator cover in the freezer and look at your frost pattern on the evaporator.
Good frost:

That is a normal frost pattern on an evaporator and everything is good.

Bad frost:

That shows a freon leak and you would need to call a qualified professional to complete this repair. This can get expensive so think if it might just be better to replace the unit.

Good Luck!

Why is my ge refriderator "frost-free" freezer frosting up?

most likely the defrost heater behind the panel thats frosted up is burned out so it cant defrost the unit,g.e. is notorious for this, remove this panel inside the freezer and remove 2 screws at the bottom of the evaporator coil holding the heater to the evaporator and unplug it the new part number is g.e. Ice maker not working....freezer door had been ajar and freezer frosted up...now the ice maker will not make ice

With the extra frost which is also on your evaporator it reduces the efficiency of the freezer. Put the unit into a defrost cycle, wait for it to enter a defrost cycle on it's on which should be at least once a day or cut if off, open the doors and let it thaw out.

Why is my ice maker getting frost build up?

The two most likely culprits are the defrost heater system (heater, thermostat, timer) or the evaporator cooling fan is not working. But also take a look at the speed your ice filler tray is filling, if the pressure is too high, then water can splash out and cause and ice/frost buildup.

My Whirlpool Freezer/Refrigerator model# ET19RMXGW02 is not keeping items cold. The ice maker is not working. There is frost in on the back wall of the freezer but objects like ice cream are all soft. ...

your evaporator coil behind this frost on the wall is iced up and you cant blow cold air through solid ice, remove this panel and defrost the coil, then check the defrost heating element below the coil, the defrost thermostat located on the coil or the defrost timer itself for being defective

Freezer Defrosts on its own

Yes it is supposed to. Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

If it seems to defrost too long and start thawing the contents then the defrost thermsotat may be bad. It's purpose is to stop the defrost heater when the temp reaches around 32 degrees. If it doesn't work the heater will stay on for the entire defrost cycle and possible melt things.
