Question about Cell Phones

5 Answers

When I travel abroad my New York Times app doesn't retrieve news even if connected to Internet via wi-fi. The problem disappears when I get back home. The other apps (eg BBC News) work normally regardless of my location. It must be something with the NYT settings but I can't figure out what it is. Please help. Margot

But I'm currently in the US (which is abroad to me as I live in Europe) and it is hard to believe I can't retrieve NYT news when I'm in NYC!

  • mds7 Aug 30, 2010

Currently I'm in NYC but this problem occurred before whenever I travelled abroad even within the EU.

  • mds7 Aug 30, 2010

I'm using the NYT app for iPhone (version 2.3.5) and my iPhone is a 3G one.
I've already used the "reset your NYT app" function that I found in Settings but it didn't work. Neither did deleting the NYT app from my iPhone and a subsequent re-installing it.

  • mds7 Aug 30, 2010

I'm sorry but your solution didn't work. I turned the phone off and then on, my Internet connection via wi-fi is acting properly, I deleted and reinstalled the NYT app and it doesn't retrieve news. I can open the app, see the commercial at the bottom of the screen but the rest of the screen is empty ie contains new news. Pressing the arrow icon to download the news doesn't help. What I could do next? Please note that I don't have this problem when I'm in my home country and the problem reoccurs each time I go abroad - but only with this app - the others are working normally.

  • mds7 Aug 31, 2010

I haven't received any other advice but "restart your iPhone" or "reinstall your NYT app". Unfortunately, it didnt help to cure the problem. Does anyone has other solutions?

  • mds7 Aug 31, 2010

Hi, I'm using iPhone 3G, don't know which phone server (how to check it?). I'm in the US now so I don't think the use of NYT is restricted here. As I wrote before to other experts restarting the phone and reinstalling the NYT app on my iPhone doesn't help.

  • mds7 Aug 31, 2010

Can anyone read the thread of emails about my problem and help?
    Many thanks,

Thank you. Sorry for being a pest, but could you tell me how to change APN on my iPhone? Thanks a million!

Please check the settings for the NY app. It could be that the app is still stuck to the old (US) APN (Access Point Name). Change the APN to user defined and when it prompts select the local (while abroad in a hotel or wherever) APN.

Hello.
It may be a satellite problem.
Since BBC news works world-wide.
New York Times may be restricted to some areas.
May I know what phone model and phone server you're using.

I just switched to a different internet provider. Alexa says she is having trouble connecting. What should I do?

You probably need to connect to your new wireless router.

Open the Alexa app.
In the Alexa app, open the left navigation panel and then select Settings.
Select your device and then select Update Wi-Fi. If you're adding a new device to your account, select Set up a new device instead.
On your Echo device, press and hold the Action button for five seconds. The light ring changes to orange, and your mobile device connects to your Echo device. A list of available Wi-Fi networks appear in the app.
Note: The Alexa app may ask you to manually connect your device to your Echo device through your Wi-Fi settings.
Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the network password (if required). If you don't see your Wi-Fi network, scroll down and select Add a Network (for hidden networks) or Rescan.
Optional - Save your Wi-Fi password to Amazon: Any Wi-Fi passwords saved during setup automatically appear when you connect a new Alexa device to the same Wi-Fi network. The password is also remembered if you switch between saved Wi-Fi networks. For more information, go to Saving Your Wi-Fi Passwords to Amazon FAQs.
Optional - Connect to a public network: Enter any required information if you are connecting to a public network that requires a web browser to sign in, like a school or hotel. The information could be a pre-shared password, room number, or just a button to accept conditions for using the network. This information cannot be saved to Amazon. Contact the network owner for more information.
Select Connect. After your device connects to your Wi-Fi network, a confirmation message appears in the app.

How do I update the Google play store app

  1. Turn the phone off, wait a bit, and turn it back on. Do this outside or near a window for best results.
  2. Check your phone Settings. Is Wi-Fi enabled? Is Data enabled? If you don't have at least one of these enabled, you won't receive updates. If you only have Wi-Fi enabled, you will only receive updates when you are connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.
  3. Check Apps in your phone Settings. Make sure the Google Play Store app is enabled.
  4. Check the settings within the App itself. You can set the app to update automatically.
  • Launch the Play Store app.
  • In the upper left corner, touch the three horizontal bars next to Google Play.
  • Touch Settings (near the bottom).
  • Touch Auto-update apps and select one of the choices. I have mine set to "Auto-update apps over Wi-Fi only."
If none of this works, contact your provider.

I hope this helps!

Are you fully charged?
Have you been hitting the download button too many times? I think that from my experience, it causes the phone to jam up.

Can I browse the internet on an ipad mini??

Of course. You first must be connected to the Internet via wi-fi or cellular connection (not all iPads have cellular). Once you have set that up (which is one of the first things you do when you set up an iPad), the Safari browser (the icon with the compass) and many (most?) apps connect to the Internet. Although you can look things up through the browser, many services have separate apps to perform their function, e.g. Yelp, Facebook. Apps like Weather retrieve their information from the Internet without having to go to a specific site, and apps like Notes sync your notes on the Internet (and may be available on your computer, as a result).

In fact, a large proportion of your activities on the iPad can't take place without a connection to the Internet.

If you connect your wi fi route rthen go to start menu thne type in run 'ping yahoo.com -t"
then press enter
If you get reply from yahoo.com then your internet is working fine.
Then there should be firewall issue.
turn of your windows firewall, antivirus firewall and router firewall.

But if you get request time out after run above ping commmand thne there is still issue in your router or your computer ip adrees settings.

Also type in run "services.msc"

Then select dns client in right pane and stop and start it.
Some times dns issue creates this issue .
