The ac adapter red light stays on and the counsole will not work

This problem occurs when the external power supply has detected a fault. The power supply has several built-in safeguards to help prevent damage to either the console or to the power supply. The power supply will turn off if one of the following conditions is true:

• There is too much current.
• The voltage is too high.
• The temperature of the power supply is too high.

When any of these conditions are true, the light on the power supply turns red. Here are some steps that you can use to try to fix the problem.

Step 1: Make sure that the power supply is cool

The red light might indicate that the power supply is too hot or that it has overheated. Follow these steps if the power supply light is red:

1. Make sure that your Xbox 360 console is turned off.
2. Disconnect your Xbox 360 Power Supply from your Xbox 360 console and from the wall outlet.
3. Let the power supply cool for two hours in a well-ventilated space. Do not connect the Xbox 360 power supply to the console or to the wall outlet during this time.
4. After the power supply has cooled for two hours, reconnect the Xbox 360 Power Supply to the console and to the wall outlet.
If cooling the power supply does not resolve the problem or if the problem persists, use the steps in the next section.

Step 2: Make sure that the power supply is plugged in correctly

Make sure that the power supply is directly plugged into a working wall outlet. You may have problems with the power supply if you use an extension cord or a power strip if the extension cord or the power strip is faulty or cannot supply the required power to the console.

If the power supply is still not working as expected, use the steps in the next section.

Step 3: Plug the power supply into a different wall outlet

To eliminate the possibility that the wall outlet you are using is faulty or that there is a blown fuse, plug the power cord into a different wall outlet in a different area of your place of residence.

If this does not resolve the problem, use the steps in the next section.

Step 4: Try another Xbox 360 Power Cord and Xbox 360 Power Supply

If you have a different Xbox 360 Power Cord and Xbox 360 Power Supply, try to use them to test the console. If the console turns on when you use a different power cord and power supply, you need to replace the faulty power cord and power supply. If the console does not turn on, the issue may be with the console itself.

If this does not resolve the problem, use the steps in the next section.

Step 5: Obtain a replacement Xbox 360 Power Supply

If the steps in this article did not resolve the issue and the Xbox 360 Power Supply light continues illuminate red, you need to obtain a replacement power supply.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

Power box light is blinking orange and sometime a steady red and console want come on.

Green Indicator Light:

The default indicator light is green. When the Xbox 360 power supply light is green it means that there are no problems with your power supply. However, if you are having problems and the power supply light is green, this means that the console is faulty and you need to contact Xbox 360 support.

Orange or Yellow Indicator Light

When the Xbox 360 power supply light is orange or yellow this means there is no problem with your console but the power supply can't supply it with power.

To remedy this problem, first try unplugging the Xbox 360 power supply from the console and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. You'll also want to uplug the Xbox 360 power supply from the power cord.

Wait for about five minutes and then reconnect everything. You might also want to try plugging it into another wall outlet without an extension cord.

If you are still getting an orange or yellow indicator light, then something is at fault with the Xbox 360 power supply. If this is the case, contact the Xbox 360 customer support to get a new one.

Red Indicator Light:

If the xbox 360 power supply light is red, then there is something wrong with the power supply connection. If this is the case, try the same solution as listed above of unplugging the power supply from the console, unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet and unplugging the power supply from the power cord. Wait for about five minutes and then reconnect everything. You might also want to try plugging it into another wall outlet without an extension cord.

If the indicator lights are still red, then there is a fault with the power supply. If this is the case, contact customer support about getting a new one.

No Indicator Light:

If the XBox 360 power supply light is not illuminating at all, this usually means that the Xbox power supply is not connected to the wall outlet correctly. On the other hand, it might also be a fault with the power supply or the power cord.

Either way, try the same solution as listed above for the red indicator lights. If you still don't see any lights illuminated after unplugging and then reconnecting everything, you'll need to contact customer support about getting a new power supply.

Green and Orange Indicator Light:

If the indicator light is flashing green and orange, this may mean that the console does not detect the AV Pack.

Disconnect and then reconnect the Xbox AV Pack. Make sure the connections are firmly connected. Turn your Xbox back on.

If the indicator light is still flashing green and orange, try another AV pack if one is available.

If the indicator light is still flashing green and orange, you'll need to contact Miscrosoft Customer support.

Flashing Orange Indicator Light:

If your Xbox console's indicator light flashes orange, this means the internal components have overheated and the Xbox has automatically shut down to prevent damage.

Turn off the console and let it cool for at least 10 minutes.

To prevent the Xbox from overheating in the future, make sure that it's not placed in a closed cabinet or on carpet. It's best to get the Xbox elevated off the ground where the PSU can have maximum heat release.

You'll also want to make sure the Xbox is not located near a heat source like the back side of a television, computer, monitor, or other electrical device.

Red light on power box for 360

i have to personally dissagree with 'wildbear' :-)
well not actually dissagree but i think the problem will be at lot less technical than all the writing he has done.
a simpler check.......does the 360 'switch on' ??
i assume with a red light on the power brick it dosnt ??
the problem is more likely a faulty pin (terminal) inside one of the USB slots you have been using for either a controller charger or wired controller (or a usb memory stick to play music thru ur xbox??)......plugging chargers/wired controllers in & out of either the 2 front slots (behind the flap) or the 1 at the back can sumtimes bend one of the terminals causing it to touch the outer casing of the usb slot ?? if it does this it shorts the board of the 360 which in turn stops u powering up the 360 all together :-(
one of the signs of this is a 'RED' light on the power brick & the 360 not powering up at all !! but sumtimes the power brick light will stay orange or even green.....even with this fault ! it dosnt always turn red !
One way to rectify it is (un-plug the powere brick from the mains first) & unplug ALL USB CONNECTIONS TO THE 360 !! (controller chargers ect) & try powering up the 360 !! (after plugging it back in)
if this fails ur gonna need a torch & a little screw driver (or tweezers) un-plug everything from the 360 & look inside ALL usb slots you have used ! check to see if any of the prongs have bent accidently whilst plugging in & out chargers ect ..... if they have straighten them so they are not touching any of the sides of the usb slot....
after doing this ...plug back in and 'hopefully' Whoooop Whooooop :-)

hope this helps ??
failing this it maybe as wildbear suggests & its a problem with the power brick altho i very much doubt it ?? they normally way out live an xbox !
remember thumbs up if this helps :-)

Xbox 360 won't turn on

I had this problem. Make sure the pins in the USB ports (2 on the front and 1 on the back of the console) aren't bent and there's nothing obstructing them. I unbent some of the metal inside these ports, and voila! I have a working xbox.
