First take out the SD Memory card. If the tiny switch on the card (Top right) is in Lock position (marked on the card), slide it up to unlock position.

Problem nikon d40 memory card is locked. slide lock to write position

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

The problem is Memory card is locked. Slide lock to "Write" position. I have my card in the Write Position only eventhough it is showing the same

Hi there fellow Nikon user, I understand that you're having issues with your memory card. You mentioned that you already put on the unlock/write position but you;re getting the same error message. There's a big possibility that the card's locking mechanism is damaged. I suggest that you try a different memory card to isolate the problem. If inserting the other card doesn't fix the problem, Then most likely it's the card slot itself that is already busted. Have it checked right away by an authorized Nikon technician.
However if the other card was accepted and you're able to write info with it, then we can conclude that the memory that you're having problems with should be replaced.

Hope this help. Cheers!

When I put into my camers Nikon D40 IT SAYS IT IS LOCKED?

I sure hope you mean an SD or an SDHC card, since the D40 doesn't take CF cards.

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Memory card is locked. slide into 'write' position

Hello. If you remove the memory card, and take a close look at the card itself you will see the lock mechanism. Take your memory card, there should be a little white thing on the side of it,just push it the other way and wola!!! fixed! simple as that.
