Install Vista on Dell optiplex gx 260

Hi,

Are you satisfied how Vista works on Optiplex gx 260?

I am in doubts if it is worth upgrade this desktop to Vista, cause as far as I see on other PC - Vista really requires much more than MS declares in min system requirements...

:)
Sincerely,

The big problem you will ever face with Windows Vista using optiplex gx260 is the screen resolution...This is a great hurdle in the upgradation of Windows...You're also to keep in mind that there are some softwares which are not compatable with Vista like folder lock etc...So I'd suggest not to shift to Vista...XP is still the best option...allowing multiple tasks to perform securely, faster and without any compatability issue...Enjoy using Windows XP...

I'm assuming these are your specs for a Dell optiplex gx260:

Specs: 2.26-GHz Pentium 4, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 40GB hard drive, integrated Intel 845G graphics chip set, CD-ROM drive, six USB 2.0 ports, 15-inch CRT

The biggest reason *not* to go to Vista would be you need a graphics card (that's Vista compatible) to get Vista's Aero interface, an integrated graphics will just not do.

Second, although vista has been shown to be more secure (albeit not much) than Windows XP, it's really about compatibility with your other software, which Vista just lacks.

Not to mention the hassle of finding Vista compatible drivers for your computer. Check with Dell on this.

Overall though, and this just my opinion, I personally wouldn't go to Vista, your computer specs are pretty old, and the amount of reinvestment you need to run Vista is the deal breaker.

There should be no problem, if the sound doesn’t work try uninstalling the the Drivers and Reinstalling after you installed Vista im pretty sure that Vista will install the Drivers automatically.

Lost resolution windows vista upgrade on GX260

Hi all,

I tried numerous solutions for this issue and none of them worked except this one. I tested it with Vista Ultimate and don’t know if other Vista versions have the same drivers but here’s what worked for me:

1. Right click ‘Computer’ then left click ‘Properties’ to open up System window.
2. Click ‘Device Manager’
3. Click ‘+’ on ‘Display Adapters’ and you should see the drivers for your video. Right click and select ‘Update Driver Software...’
4. Select ‘Browse my computer for driver software’ and click ‘next’.
5. Click ‘Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer’
6. Untick ‘Show compatible hardware’
7. Select ‘Intel Corporation’ then select ‘Intel 82865G’. Click next.

This will install the drivers. No they are not the same drivers for the hardware but they work a treat!

Dell optiplex gx-260 slow performace

If this is happening on all workstations you should look at your network settings and verify that your DNS settings are correct.  Also look in the error logs on the server to see if it is fillingup with system or application errors.
