Hi, well that connector, is the High Current 12 V DC supply for the CPU, Power Distribution.
Now IF the PSU is shutting down when this plug is inserted, then you MUST have a problem with that Circuit, either the CPU, and/or the Power Conditioning circuitry supporting the CPU.
Often is is the actual CPU itself, has failed and/ or the Vregs, Or The Electrolytic Capacitors, right by the CPU socket.
When this happens, IF it is ONLY the CPU, then a repair can be effected.
If it is the Vregs, and/or the Capacitors, then less so. in that case a new MB would most likely be in order.
I have repaired some Gassed Capacitors and Vregs on the MB's itself, but this depends on price of initial price of the MB, the actual faulty components, and the cost and availability of said components. usually a new MB is in order, as we do not want to put a new CPU into the repaired board and have it destroyed, which can easy happen.

***I'm pretty sure your power supply is dead, you will either #1 take to repair shop or #2 replace it yourself.

The Best Value 550W Gold PSU 12cm 24-Pin 550 PSU is compatible.

The Corsair Memory 550W VX PSU is compatible and Corsair is an excellent brand, but you may have an issue locating the excess power connectors inside the case.

The Xilence XP480-12R Power 480W Quiet PSU would be fine, providiing the "hard drive connectors:2', are 4-pin Molex connectors.

First remove the power plug from the smps and press the power switch few time and wait for few minutes the re plug the power connector to the smps and switch on the computer if you still dont have power then you will have to check whether the smps work to test that its not enough to test the voltage in the 21/24 pin you will have to short the green wire and the black wire and see whether the smps fan is working if the fan is not working then the problem is with smps

Wat goes where from the power supply

on the newer psu's (power supply units) they are labeled. if they are not there is a basic rule. if it fits the socket without forcing it, use it there. there are many 4 pin plugs on a psu. these are all identical and all are exactly the same. they can be used anywhere a 4 pin connector is needed. newer psu's also have 6 pin, 8 pin and sata plugs. 6 pin and 8 pin are generally for video cards that are pcix sata pugs are for any sata drive, like a dvd or a hard disk. also there is a 24 pin or a 20 + 4 pin connector. this goes to the mother board.

I would like to know how to troubleshoot a brand new Ultra LS600 power supply. I would like to go beyond hearing "it's dead" since I am getting power to the motherboard (via indicator light)m but the PSU...

You can start the PSU manually with a paper clip.
Remove the 20 pin connector from the motherboard, leave the four pin power connectors attached to your various drives (this will provide a load on the power supply when it start up (provided it is not faulty).
Look at the 20 pin connector with the connector facing you.and the locking clip to your left.
The fourth pin from the bottom LH corner should be a green colour wire and the next two wires (5th & 6th pin) should be black and next to the locking clip.
Straighten a paper clip and insert it into the 4th pin and into the 5th or 6th pin (ie connect these wires together). These wires connect to the front panel switch to turn on your computer. You are testing the power supply only and since it is not connected to the motherboard the computer won't start.
Now connect the power unit to the mains and switch on the mains, if the power supply is OK the PSU fan should spin up and your hard disk should also spin up. If nothing happens the the PSU is faulty.
You can test the +5volts and +12volts supply on a 4 pin power connector with a multimeter. The red wire is +5volts and the yellow wire is +12volts and the black wires are negative (ground). The voltage readings should be within 5% of these voltages.
There are other voltages to be checked +3volts, -5volts, & -12volts. but these are not as critical.

The system fails to boot up after a new power supply was added

There should also be a brand - the nVidia just relates to the chipset that the board uses, but its OK, lets check the wiring first.  If we still have trouble I'll get you to double check for the brand name.
Lets just check that you have the following plugs in place:
  1. The 24 pin plug from the PSU (blue) to your motherboard - this powers the board itself.
  2. A 4 pin 12v P4 connector plugs into the motherboard (near the CPU).  This is the CPU power.  It runs from the 8pin blue socket on the PSU.  Make sure that the end plugging into the motherboard is only 4 pin.
  3. No power cables required to run the 8600GT so the red sockets on the PSU are empty.
  4. Power cables going to all your peripherals (hard drives and CDroms).  These run from the black sockets on the PSU.
Does your current setup match that?

SuperMicro X7DAL-E will not power up

I am using the same board with a PC Power and Cooling 1 K Watt power supply which is a little high in price and no longer available. I have been using PC Power and Cooling since the 1980’s and have had few problems and they have always kept up with the latest power standards if not exceeding them. The replacement power supply has even more power.
However, you can find adapters to use 4 pin IDE drive Power connectors for the 4 and 8 pin power connectors. PC Power and Cooling and Cables To Go both sell them. That is the cheapest fix for you but I would also use the PCI-E auxiliary power connector.
